Oxfordshire Science Park to Create 1,000 Jobs

Culham Science Park in Oxfordshire is set to expand, with up to 1,000 new science and technology jobs.

Three new research labs and office space have been discussed at the Abingdon site, and a planning application has been sent to the council. The 1,000 jobs include skilled and unskilled workers, including the construction of the new buildings and the scientists then working in them once they have been completed.

The created jobs are set to expand the workforce at the Science Park by 50%, to near 3,000. Should planning permission be granted, private companies will be invited to move operations to the park, before construction begins. Currently with 2,000 staff and 45 companies, the Culham Science Park is part of Science Vale UK, which includes two other Oxfordshire sites employing over 10,000 people between them. The expanding of the Abingdon site can only boost the area’s scientific centre credentials further.

GSK to invest £500 million in the UK including a new facility in Cumbria

BBC News have reported that GlaxoSmithKline have released a press statement today confirming that it will invest more than £500m in the UK across its manufacturing sites to increase production of key aspects for its pharmaceutical products and vaccines.  This investment could create up to a 1000 new jobs.

GSK also announced a new manufacturing facility to be built in Ulverston in Cumbria. The biopharmaceutical facility will be its first new UK factory for 40 years.

Investment will also be made at the company’s two manufacturing sites in Scotland at Montrose and Irvine.

These investments represent one of the largest commitments to the UK life-sciences sector in recent years.  They follow confirmation by the Government in the Budget yesterday that it will implement a ‘patent box’ to encourage investment in R&D and related manufacturing in the UK, by introducing a lower rate of corporation tax on profits generated from UK-owned intellectual property

Prime Minister David Cameron said: “This is excellent news, a major investment that will create many highly skilled jobs and provide a great boost to the economy….We have a world class life sciences industry, and I am determined not just to keep it here in the UK but significantly increase it too… Our innovative life sciences strategy and ground breaking patent box are already making a difference, helping to grow this important industry and ensure the great discoveries of the next decade happen here in British laboratories.

Scientists have found the key to staying slim could be in your genes

The Daily Mail reported that scientists have found that the key to staying slim could be in your genes.  Scientists believe they have found the ‘gluttony gene’ which fails to tell your brain when you are full.

Researchers at Georgetown School Healthcare Hub in the U.S conducted a research project using mice. In the study they found that a single gene broke down communication in the body and led to non-stop eating and rapid weight gain.

Generally after a meal, the activity of this gene transmits chemical signals down a chain of brain cells until they reach the hypothalamus, which receives the message that you are full and suppresses the appetite. However the mice which had a mutation of this gene ate twice as much as those without the mutation.

Scientists hope that identifying the gene could help with treatments for obesity which affects nearly one in four adults in the UK.

Scottish Power creates 300 new jobs and is set to invest £6.5 million in new talent

Scottish Power released a press statement today announcing that it expects to invest over £5billion to upgrade the electricity network in central and southern Scotland over the next 10 years, and is launching a recruitment drive to boost its engineering and technical workforce by creating 300 new roles.

These new roles will include full-time system design roles, high-voltage, direct current (HVDC) development jobs, and transmission and distribution engineers.  It is anticipated there will be around 50 new apprenticeships created and the graduate programme will look to take in at least 50 new graduates by 2013.

Four out of five energy industry employees are set to retire over the next 15 years. In this time more than £200bn will be invested in the UK energy sector, with tens of thousands of engineers required to deliver the work.  To address this skills gap, ScottishPower is also investing £6.5 million in grassroots skills development between 2011 and 2013.

First Minister Alex Salmond said: “Three hundred new high-skilled jobs for Scotland’s energy sector is very encouraging news indeed. Scottish Power’s £6.5 million commitment is further proof of the continued long term investment by global companies in Scotland’s fast growing renewables industry.

Boehringer Ingelheim provide free first aid training for Berkshire children

Boehringer Ingelheim released a statement earlier this year stating that the Bracknell based pharmaceutical company is teaming up with St Johns Ambulance and Bracknell News to provide free first aid training in Berkshire schools.

Boehringer Ingelheim is sponsoring a part time St Johns Ambulance liaison officer to provide free first aid training in schools. Natasha Bright will be available to the schools at little or no cost to carry out training, before schools had to pay for training, so the initiative will save them hundreds of pounds or mean more taking advantage of first aid training.

Boehringer Ingelheim’s involvement in free first aid training started in 2009 when, in liaison with the Bracknell News and St John, it launched free Childlifesaver courses for readers to learn basic skills required to save a baby or toddler’s life.

Duncan Cantor, director of communications at Boehringer, said: “As a company, we are committed to family health. This year is the 50th anniversary of the opening our UK office and what better way to celebrate our half-century in Bracknell than by extending the work we have already done in the first aid arena to local children. By helping them to learn the basic first aid skills they may, one day, be in a position to save someone’s life and that, for me, is a pretty good legacy for any company to have.”
