Development Chemist – North East

Graeme Pallas at CK Science is recruiting for a Development Chemist to join a multinational pharmaceutical company at their site based in North East England on initially a 6 month contract. 

Responsibilities:

As a Development Chemist the main purpose of your role will be to:

  • Develop and scale up new processes in the laboratory related to the manufacture of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API’s).
  • Designing synthetic routes for new products or transformations
  • Carry out process scale up studies

Qualifications:

As Development Chemist, you will have the following qualifications, skills and experience:

  • PhD in Synthetic Organic Chemistry or similar subject, or
  • Demonstrable working experience in an R&D laboratory
  • Excellent communication skills

Development Engineer Job Description

As a Development Engineer, the main purpose of your role will be to maintain continued growth by being innovative and forward thinking, preferably within the new product development arena.

Further responsibilities of this Development Engineer will include:

  • Reporting to the Technical Team Leader
  • Responsible for developing new product designs and implementing their scale up through to commercial production.
  • As a good communicator and team player you will have a key role in helping direct cross functional project groups establish specifications with both prospective customers and suppliers.
  • You will take the products from conception in the lab through to commercialisation on the manufacturing plant.
  • Encompassing a mixture of development and process engineering work

This role will be on a day basis however flexibility is a must as trials may run into the night or over weekends.

 

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

As a Development Engineer, you will have the following qualifications, skills and experience:.

  • A specialism in chemical/process engineering or development chemistry
  • A high calibre graduate with a 2.1 or above degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Polymer/ Material Science or Chemical Engineering.
  • An analytical, problem solving approach with the ability to generate and implement ideas.
  • Computer literate, ideally you will have a working knowledge of the following: coating techniques, drying, fluid processing and web handling, preferably gained in a similar process industry.

Process Development Chemist Job – North West, UK

Our client, a chemicals manufacturer based in the North West of England, is currently looking for a Process Development Chemist to work within their polymer additives department.

 

Responsibilities:

The roles and responsibilities of this Process Development Chemist / Chemical Engineer will be to implement chemical processes into manufacturing and to translate those processes from a laboratory environment to full scale production. You will analyse and improve existing manufacturing processes to improve the overall quality and efficiency, and also to reduce waste.

The Process Development Chemist will develop working knowledge of all manufacturing processes through plant visits (likely to be overseas) and will transfer those chemical processes from the laboratory to manufacturing. This will include process optimisation, planning and designing scale up to pilot plant level, partnering with manufacturing and other internal resources to identify the best production site, and working closely with manufacturing on process commissioning and start-up. You will also evaluate trials of new manufacturing technology at external tollers to determine the feasibility of production either at the external or the internal manufacturing source.

 

Person Specification:

To be considered for this Process Development Chemist / Chemical Engineer position you will possess a Masters degree (or equivalent) in chemistry or chemical engineering, ideally with PhD knowledge. Considerable industrial experience is essential in the following areas: scale up of manufacturing process from lab to commercial operations; strong expertise in organic chemistry and ideally with anti-oxidant or UV polymer additives; excellent bench / experimentation expertise; strong project management skills; statistical design of experiments expertise and six sigma green or black belt preferred. You will also have strong written and communication skills as well as being happy travelling overseas with work when required.

Process Chemist – Manchester, North West, UK

A Process Chemist is needed to work on scale up projects for a company which specialises in the development, manufacture and supply of metals and inorganics based in Manchester, North West, UK.


Working as a Process Chemist, your mail roles and responsibilities will include focusing on the development of new processes and furthering products along the new product development system. Projects may include topics such as identifying new or modified equipment and setting up and overseeing trials. These could be located either onsite or at suppliers’ locations.

As a Process Chemist, you will also be involved in the evaluation of technology and installation and commissioning of the equipment recommended. Projects could also include the development of new continuous processes for current batch processes, or identifying improvements and/or cost savings to existing processes. New products involving raw materials which are not currently used may require special equipment for safe handling and all stages of operation.

This Process Chemist role will involve working closely with technical and other staff as well as external contacts, and there may be a requirement to write risk assessments and SOPs for new equipment.

The ideal candidate for this Process Chemist job will be educated to a minimum degree level or equivalent in a Chemistry related discipline and will hold a postgraduate qualification inn Chemical Engineering.

The following skills, experience and competencies are also required for this Process Chemist job:

  • 2-3 years minimum experience post qualification;
  • A background in one or more of the following inorganic chemistry, catalysis, ceramics, sorption;
  • Direct experience in process scale up is essential;
  • Good communication skills;
  • H&S awareness;
  • Good decision making and problem solving skills are essential to the role. Experience of particle size analysis, flow and surface area experiments would be beneficial as well as of kilns and milling.
  • Experience in Chemical/Process Engineering would be a distinct advantage.

This Process Chemist job is primarily a day role but candidates must be willing to work shifts if required – these will be 6am-2pm and 2pm – 10pm. An occasional night shift may also be required should the project require it though this would be very rare.
