Technical Manager – Aberdeen

Barney Smith at CK Science is recruiting for a Technical Manager to work at a specialist polymer manufacturing company based in Aberdeen for a permanent role.

Responsibilities:

As a Technical Manager you will be responsible for providing technical expertise and guidance to clients globally and offshore.  You will also develop polymer coating using extraction and injection moulding techniques to customer specifications.  The team is small and you will have to be hands on and happy to work any area including QA, QC, or dealing with technical specifications.

Qualification and skills:

As a Technical Manager you will have the following skills and experience:

  • Masters qualified in a polymer processing related subject or equivalent industrial experience
  • A proven track record in extrusion or injection moulding

The job:

This Technical Managers role will in the long term offer worldwide travel and ad hoc offshore trips with opportunities later to be stationed abroad. There may be some flexibility in salary with relevant experience within the Oil & Gas sector.

Responsibilities: 

As a Senior Chemist, you will be joining a growing team specialising in the development of coatings & paints for use in industrial applications. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Project management of formulation & development studies surrounding new & existing coating technologies.
  • Carrying out blue sky concept generation.
  • Performing application & analytical testing using physical & chemical techniques.
  • Working closely with manufacturing teams during scale up of products.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate for this Senior Chemist role will have the following qualifications, skills & experience:

  • A qualification in Chemistry, Polymer Science or a related discipline (or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated experience surrounding the development of coatings, paints, emulsions or relevant chemical products (e.g. inks, polymers, fine chemicals).
  • Specific experience of UV Coatings would be advantageous, but it is not essential.

Responsibilities:

As a Polymer Chemist, you will be responsible for:

  • Running research & development studies for the organisation’s ranges of adhesives, resins, paints, rubbers, coatings and other polymer materials.
  • Carrying out application testing, coupled with mechanical & physical testing.
  • Working closely with manufacturing teams during scale-up & pilot plant trials.

Responsibilities:

Working as a Sales Engineer, your core duties will focus around providing technical sales for the organisation’s range of Polymers & Plastics applications. Their product portfolio includes:

  • Machined PTFE, Peek, TFK, PCTFE and other plastics.
  • Hot & cold compression moulded materials.
  • Melt processable injection/compression moulded materials.

Your duties will also include managing key internal (technical, marketing) & external (customer, supplier) relationships; developingand maintaining marketing strategies; performing customer, market and competitor data analysis as well as developing annual sales plans.

 

Person Specification:

To be considered for this role, you will be educated (ONC / B-Tech or higher) in a Mechanical Engineering discipline; technical knowledge of PTFE machined materials and/or injection moulded plastic components. A full Driving Licence and the willingness to travel within the UK is essential for this position.

R&D Chemist – North West, UK

An R&D Chemist is required to join the flame retardants department of a specialty chemicals manufacturer based in the North West, UK.

This R&D Chemist position will encompass the following duties:

  • You will conduct self-directed R&D of new flame retardant products.
  • Performing chemical synthesis.
  • You will also analyse, characterisation and develop processes and experiments to generate suitable compounds for various polymer systems. Commercially viable synthesis procedures will be generated for selected compounds to the point of pilot production.
  • You will collaborate with business leadership, technical service and application development labs to plan and conduct flame testing on these compounds.
  • Aswell as supporting patent applications, you will monitor and report on relevant academic research, industry trends, and competitive activity through literature searches, technical conference attendance, and communication with Sales and Marketing teams.
  • Organisation and evaluation of results will be required and you will be expected to give written and oral reports to business teams and peers.

To be considered for this R&D Chemist position the following is required:

  • The ability to independently plan and conduct experiments in organic chemical synthesis and proficiency with MS Excel and MS Office software.
  • Analytical knowledge for data analysis. Familiarity with chromatographic and spectroscopic nstrumentation and analysis.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to conduct chemical literature searching. A PhD (or equivalent) is preferred but BSc/ MSc (or equivalent) may be considered with appropriate experience in industry.
  • The desired qualification will be in organic chemistry. Experience within the field is a necessity.
