Almac cancer research funding boost

Almac has invested £13 million into two cancer research ventures, with £7 million to be spent in Northern Ireland.

The pharmaceutical company, in a partnership with Queen’s University, are set to undertake research into the clinical performance of a drug developed within Northern Ireland. There will also be a project that has the intention of setting up a drug discovery unit in Queen’s Cancer research and Cell Biology centre at Belfast City Hospital.

Irish breast cancer research investment

Breast cancer researchers from across Ireland collaborate in a project to tackle the disease.

50 experts from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland are set to combine their expertise within Ireland’s first Collaborative Cancer Research Centre established by the Irish Cancer Society. Over £6 million is expected to be invested over five years into the centre. Researchers from across Irish universities are to be involved.

The centre, led by William Gallagher of University College Dublin, “will for the first time in Ireland harness the wealth of data available on breast cancer from around the globe to inform new clinical trials and treatments, and link in with world leading scientists and institutions such as the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and the Cambridge Research Institute in the UK.”

Operations Manager – Scotland and Northern Ireland

Barney Smith at CK Science is looking to recruit an Operations Manager to join a chemical manufacturer with plants in Scotland and Northern Ireland. 

Responsibilities:

As an operations manager the successful candidate will manage and coordinate the activities of the two facilities in Scotland and Northern Ireland to optimise performance in manufacturing and despatch.

The role will be very much hands on and will involve:

  • Overseeing all quality standards
  • Manufacturing procedures and staffing across both sites
  • Develop a buying function
  • Project manage implementation of capital expenditure programmes including equipment and computer systems,
  • Developing business
  • Maintain existing relationships. 

Qualifications and skills:

The ideal candidate for this Operations Manager role must be qualified in a science or process engineering related degree or possess equivalent commercial experience and have a proven track record in operations management within the chemical industry.

Senior Analytical Chemist – Northern Ireland

Naynesh Mistry at CK Science is looking for two Senior Analytical Chemists to join an API development and manufacturer based in Northern Ireland, to supervise their team of development analysts.

Responsibilities:

The main roles and responsibilities of these Senior Analytical Chemist roles will be to perform, monitor and accept accountability for all assigned analytical duties relating to specific analytical projects as well as to supervise, delegate and review analytical activities of reporting staff. You will be responsible for the technical development and mentoring of reporting staff and will develop and validate analytical methods in support of API Development and Plant Manufacture. These methods will be for key starting materials, isolated intermediates and the final API as well as in-process controls. You will also perform routine analytical testing in-line with project requirements and will be fully competent in the following analytical techniques, as dictatedbyproject and/or departmental requirements: HPLC, GC, NMR, IR, UV, MS, KF, Classical techniques. It will also be your responsibility to prepare and present analytical data to customers (telecoms, face-to-face meetings etc.).

Qualifications and Skills:

In order to be considered for these Senior Analytical Chemist roles you will be degree qualified or equivalent in an analytical discipline. You will have previous analytical development experience in support of API Manufacturing within industry (i.e. pharmaceuticals or biotech) and will be fully proficient in (U)HPLC method development and ICH validation. With theoretical and hands-on experience of a wide range of analytical techniques required for characterising APIs (IR, NMR, MS, (U)HPLC, GC, GC-HS, LC-MS, GC-MS, IC, KF,ICP/AAS, XRPD etc.) you will have up-to-date knowledge of GMP and Regulatory requirements with respect to API development. You will be experienced in supervising and developing other analysts and technicians.
