Energy Industry Receives Jobs and Investment Boost

A series of investments by oil and gas companies will create thousands of jobs, including the opening of new oil fields in the North Sea, reports the Belfast Telegraph.

There will also be new gas fields, and these new fields should provide 5% of British energy by 2015. The project, called Cygnus, is being led by Centrica and is expected to create 4,000 jobs. BP are also to invest around £60 million in order to improve academic posts across the country.

Vince Cable, the business secretary, said that the “oil and gas industry’s immense contribution to our skills base, industrial capacity and strength as an exporter are pivotal” to the economy, before adding that “collaboration between business and higher education institutions is boosting the status of the UK as a driver of innovation.”

UK Scientists Develop New ‘Super Broccoli’

As reported by Yahoo!, UK scientists have developed a new ‘super’ broccoli which could help to protect against heart disease.

The scientists, from the Institute of Food Research, were lead by Richard Mithen. Mithen stated that when the broccoli is eaten, cholesterol is reduced in the blood stream, which could help protect against heart disease.

The broccoli is said to contain two to three times the normal amount of glucoraphanin – this works by breaking down fat in the body, thus stopping it from clogging the arteries.

The ‘super broccoli’ was developed by cross breeding traditional British broccoli with a wild Sicilian variety and a dose of glucoraphanin. This process took 14 years and now the broccoli has been granted patent by EU authorities. It is due to hit UK shelves this month!

Chemical sector could lead us out of recession

As reported by nebusiness.co.uk, the Chemical sector is the hidden part of the UK economy and could help lead us out of recession.

Taking a step back, it is clear to see that the Chemical industries provide all the materials that are used to power £880k of the UK economic activity. It is therefore important that the Government recognises the key role that the chemical industries plays by when considering investment in companies working in the sector. After all, dampening down investment in this sector could hamper the UK’s ability to innovate and discover new products which are key to our economy.

In addition, according to nebusiness.co.uk, the Government must consider the impact of it’s domestic energy and climate change measures on these energy intensive industries. The major chemical manufacturers are fully aware of their responsibility to play their part in increasing energy efficiency and climate change adaption, and as a result have made major steps to become more energy efficient. If inappropriate legalisation is enforced, it will undermine the government’s efforts to attract investment in the UK.

In a bid to tackle these issues, the CBI will be working with the chemical industry across Government departments to highlight the important role the sector plays in the UK economy and the steps required to help ensure it’s success.
