Analytical Chemistry Jobs Market – 23rd May 2016

Each week, CK Science is providing a snapshot of the analytical chemistry jobs market. Over time, we aim to give you a picture of how it changes and evolves, and most importantly, how this may impact on you depending on overall demand and seasonal changes. So whether you are an Analyst looking for a new science job or an employer seeking new Chemist to join your team, we hope that this market snapshot helps you with your decision making.

Our tracking is based on each week screening some of the UKs leading vacancy boards for how many analytical chemistry jobs have been advertised within the previous week.

This summary was completed on Monday 23rd May and relates to adverts posted for Analytical Chemists on:

  • New Scientist
  • Monster
  • CV Library
  • Emedcareers
  • Pharmiweb
  • Willey job network
  • Access Science jobs.

Our results showed that from these job boards a total of 477 Chemistry jobs were published last week, with:

  • 363 permanent roles
  • 114 temporary or contract roles

This week we have tracked a small uplift in the number of scientific jobs being advertised. These roles are predominantly contract and temporary positions, which implies that science recruitment is following the same trend CK is tracking in its other divisions.

We have identified a pattern of behaviour that we are attributing to the upcoming Brexit Referendum and the uncertainty around the UK’s future. As such, CK clients are opting to recruit contract staff rather than commit to permanent expansion of their workforce, thereby safe guarding them against whatever decision comes from the vote. As the results are not due until 23-24 June, we foresee this continuing for the coming weeks.

A Biorenewables Development Centre has opened in York

The BBC has reported that the Bio renewables Development Centre (BDC) a new facility designed to make the UK a world leader in green chemistry has opened at the University of York.

The Bio renewables Development Centre (BDC) hopes to bridge the gap between laboratories and the chemicals industry. This is essential as chemicals derived from plants are expected to play an important role in the future as oil supplies decline. The centre received £2.5m funding from the government.

The centre’s director, Joe Ross, said the facility aimed to help the industry make the transition from petroleum-based chemicals to renewable feedstocks. “At the University of York, we have had two centres – one based in biological sciences, the other in chemistry – that are doing a lot of R&D within what we call biorenewables, so using plants or microbes to make useful stuff……….over recent years, we have realised that we need to have a centre that allows us to scale-up that process. And the result is the BDC.”

Bid Could Create Thousands of Jobs in Runcorn

A science park in Runcorn is bidding to win Enterprise status and create thousands of jobs, reports runcornandwidnesworld.co.uk.

If the Daresbury Science and Innovation Park is granted this status, then it could generate up to 10,000 skilled jobs and lead to £150 million investment. Holton Council leader Clr Rob Polhill has said the status would “take Daresbury to the next level.”

Around 100 companies have offices, workshops and laboratories on the site, and the massive investment would mean that even more specialist office, lab and technical spaces would be developed. The site opened in 2006 and is a world class centre for cutting edge sciences and high-tech businesses.

Environmental Chemists on the Rise

Environmental chemists are much needed in most jobs, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry, reports ibnlive.com.

All industries need environmental officers to assess the effect the business has on the environment, and find ways to reduce that impact. The job essentially involves knowing the effects of chemicals (or whatever the business deals with) on the environment. For example, how can a pharmaceutical firm safely and effectively dispose of waste products or leftover stock?

Industries are taking a much more proactive role in environmental issues, so that the role of chemists is becoming prominent. Pharmaceutical, chemical and waste disposal industries all obviously need environmental chemists, but recently even IT firms are beginning to employ people to monitor their environmental impact. A solid grounding in chemistry is of great importance, and it is often recommended that those looking into such a role go on environmental courses.
