There has been an almost insignificant change in the total number of science jobs this week. In fact there has been a greater variation in the number of permanent and temporary vacancies, with contract roles reducing by eight, and permanent jobs growing by seven.

The fluctuating market place that has established itself over the last eight weeks, has continued this week with a small 8% decline in the last week. Whilst this is a nominal reduction, it has resulted in there being 10% fewer permanent and contract vacancies advertised. However, based on our recent records, this should change again next week!

Last week there was a small increase in the number of science jobs which brings the total number closer to the average formed throughout 2016. This increase was reflected in a growth in permanent roles, which grew from 387 to 414 whereas contract roles declined slightly.

There has been a small decline in the volume of Analytical Chemistry jobs advertised in the last week. This is mostly evident in the contract market place, where numbers have dropped by 41%. Whether this is directly linked to market place confidence and commitment towards permanent recruitment or something else should soon become apparent.

There has been a small increase in the volume of roles within the science jobs market over the last week, continuing the upward trend we have seen over the last couple of weeks. More surprisingly the greater fluctuation has been between permanent and contract roles with permanent seeing a drop of 15%, whereas temporary jobs grew by 77%. If this continues next week we will need to explore why this trend is emerging.

The increase is visible across both permanent and contract roles, however permanent roles continues to grow at a faster rate.

There has been a dramatic uplift in the number of Analytical Chemistry jobs that have been published in the last week – growing from 490 up to 687 this week. Both permanent and contract roles have experienced growth, with contract more than doubling its numbers! This change in behaviour belies our assessment last week that the tax year end will be slowing down recruitment. In fact, the increase in jobs could be a last minute recruitment drive to use up budgets! Lets see what next week brings.

Our tracking is based on each week screening some of the UKs leading vacancy boards for how many Analytical Chemistry jobs have been advertised within the previous week.

This summary was completed on Monday 21st December and relates to adverts posted for Analytical Chemists on:

  • New Scientist
  • Monster
  • CV Library
  • Emedcareers
  • Pharmiweb
  • Willey job network
  • Access Science jobs.

Our results showed that from these job boards a total of 654 Analytical Chemistry vacancies were published last week, with:

  • 573 permanent roles
  • 81 temporary or contract roles

As we reach the week of Christmas the numbers of jobs have dropped by 23%, affecting both permanent and contract jobs.

As this is our last report for 2015 we thought we would recap on what we learnt throughout the course of the year, this includes:

  • Average job numbers is 644 per week split as 544 permanent and 99 temporary
  • September and December were the best months to search for a permanent job as numbers reached 800, and tipped the scale at over 1400 at points.
  • In comparison to last year, job numbers for this week are up 27%
  • In the last 6 months of this year job numbers grew by 12%
