Chemical sector could lead us out of recession

As reported by nebusiness.co.uk, the Chemical sector is the hidden part of the UK economy and could help lead us out of recession.

Taking a step back, it is clear to see that the Chemical industries provide all the materials that are used to power £880k of the UK economic activity. It is therefore important that the Government recognises the key role that the chemical industries plays by when considering investment in companies working in the sector. After all, dampening down investment in this sector could hamper the UK’s ability to innovate and discover new products which are key to our economy.

In addition, according to nebusiness.co.uk, the Government must consider the impact of it’s domestic energy and climate change measures on these energy intensive industries. The major chemical manufacturers are fully aware of their responsibility to play their part in increasing energy efficiency and climate change adaption, and as a result have made major steps to become more energy efficient. If inappropriate legalisation is enforced, it will undermine the government’s efforts to attract investment in the UK.

In a bid to tackle these issues, the CBI will be working with the chemical industry across Government departments to highlight the important role the sector plays in the UK economy and the steps required to help ensure it’s success.

£100m Waste-to-Chemicals Site to Open in Teeside

iStock_000006963239Medium[1]As reported by The Engineer, Solvert Ltd, a renewable chemical sector entrepreneur, have announced their exciting plans to develop the ‘UK’s first manufacturing facility’.

The new facility will be producing industrial chemicals from domestic and commercial waste, on Teeside. This will involve advanced biological fermentation processes to produce renewable n-butanol, acetone, hydrogen and electricity from wet biodegradable waste.

The chemicals manufacturer has managed to secure an impressive £200,000 of funding to help develop the project which includes a £100,000 investment from the Finance for Business North East Proof Concept (POC) Fund, along with support from Business Link and the North East Process Industry Cluster (NEPIC).

CEO of Solvert stated,  “The current drive within the UK is to divert waste away from landfill sites into, more productive uses – such as feedstocks for other processes.”

“Organic waste, such as spoilage from supermarkets or the leftover food from our kitchens at home and in restaurants, holds immense potential for conversion into valuable chemicals to replace those produced from crude oil.

“At the moment, hydrogen, acetone and n-butanol come from non-renewable petrochemical sources and there are no UK producers.  N-butanol and acetone are currently imported into the UK from Western Europe and the US.

“A significant market for these chemicals already exists in the North East as well as other parts of the UK, and more customers from further afield are also looking for a greener alternative to products derived from crude oil.  These products form part of our daily lives as they are used extensively to produce paint or plastics such as Perspex.”

In addition, an experienced Chemical Engineer stated, “The fact that we are producing them in the UK and reducing imports is also a huge bonus.”

European Chemical Industry Prepare to Reach Deadline

iStock_000006963239Medium1-150x150As reported by Plastics and Rubber Weekly, according to Cefic, the European Chemical Industry Council, the European Chemical Industry is preparing to meet the looming 30 November Reach chemicals registration deadline.

President of Cefic, Christian Jourquin, stated, “Companies are doing their utmost to comply with Reach and to meet the first registration deadline. The industry has been actively involved in the establishment of Reach as well as its implementation, which applies to thousands of substances.”

According to Cefic, strong overall cooperation among Europe’s €450bn chemical industry, the EU Commission and ECHA has helped resolve many problems relating to Reach registration.

But according to Cefic, many companies face “an array of unprecedented requirements that producers find costly and time consuming. Small- and medium-sized enterprises especially have experienced problems related to the lack of expertise required to complete complex regulatory tasks.”

Cefic director general Hubert Mandery added: “Besides the resource issue, the cost burden especially hits the bottom line of small- and medium-sized firms, who represent more than 90% of all chemical companies.

“The concerns of SMEs should be taken seriously into consideration, as the following two registration phases for lower tonnage substances will be significantly more burdensome for them. It’s in the industry’s interest that Reach be workable, practical and … affordable.

“Furthermore, we want to see the plethora of European substance-related legislation consistent with Reach.”
