Chemical careers: what jobs are available?

If you have decided you want to join the chemical industry, your next step will be identifying the type of role you want. Most people presume the natural entry point is working in a laboratory, perhaps as an Analytical Chemist or in Research & Development as these jobs use the education/training you have had so far. However, there are many routes into the chemical industry.

You could decide you would prefer to be more office based for which you should explore roles in regulatory affairs or chemical sales, to name a few.

Or if you prefer the thought of physically being involved in the production of the products you could work on the plant and operations side.

You may just want to work in a laboratory, so potential roles can cover the creation of new products or processes such as R&D Chemist or Process Chemist, or you may prefer to work on the development of new materials, such as Polymer Chemists and Coatings Chemist roles. The other area that features heavily in the chemical industry is the client service side such as Technical Support, Technologists and QA Microbiologists who will respond to the needs of customers.

If you would like further details about the responsibilities of these roles click here

If you are already in the chemical industry but are unsure of how your skills can be transferred, the general rule of thumb is to follow the materials you work with rather than the function you perform. It’s far more challenging to change from organic synthesis, or ceramics to coatings than it is to move from formulations into coatings.

Chemical sector could lead us out of recession

As reported by nebusiness.co.uk, the Chemical sector is the hidden part of the UK economy and could help lead us out of recession.

Taking a step back, it is clear to see that the Chemical industries provide all the materials that are used to power £880k of the UK economic activity. It is therefore important that the Government recognises the key role that the chemical industries plays by when considering investment in companies working in the sector. After all, dampening down investment in this sector could hamper the UK’s ability to innovate and discover new products which are key to our economy.

In addition, according to nebusiness.co.uk, the Government must consider the impact of it’s domestic energy and climate change measures on these energy intensive industries. The major chemical manufacturers are fully aware of their responsibility to play their part in increasing energy efficiency and climate change adaption, and as a result have made major steps to become more energy efficient. If inappropriate legalisation is enforced, it will undermine the government’s efforts to attract investment in the UK.

In a bid to tackle these issues, the CBI will be working with the chemical industry across Government departments to highlight the important role the sector plays in the UK economy and the steps required to help ensure it’s success.

20% of UK Workforce has a Science Job

The Financial Times has reported that approximately one fifth of the UK workforce has a science based job.

5.8 million people are scientists or use science skills daily, the Science Council has discovered in a recent study. The number includes ‘secondary science workers’ such as nurses or software engineers. Scientists were found to be in industries as diverse as education, finance and farming, as well as more traditional scientific sectors, such as the chemical industry.

Chief executive of the Science Council, Diana Garnham, has said that secondary science roles can be “found literally everywhere in the economy.” The research indicates that by 2030, there could be over 7 million people involved in science in some way, prompting Diana Garnham to say “the research begins to explain… why there is such huge demand for people with science qualifications.”

Government Call for Action to Save Chemical Jobs

iStock_000006963239Medium[1]As reported by the BBC, the Government is calling for action to save jobs at a chemical firm based in the South of Scotland.

The Merseyside-based Phoenix Chemicals, recently went into administration which has had the knock-on effect of putting jobs at risk their site in Newbie near Annan.

Politicians Elaine Murray and David Mundell have called for urgent action to rectify the situation. Murray stated, “Eighty jobs were lost when Shasun Pharma pulled out of Annan in 2008, and everyone was delighted that Phoenix Chemicals purchased the site the following year. We all hoped it would be a new beginning for the Annan site.”

Murray has subsequently asked for all agencies to work together to help find new posts for all those effected by the administration of the chemicals company.

European Chemical Industry Prepare to Reach Deadline

iStock_000006963239Medium1-150x150As reported by Plastics and Rubber Weekly, according to Cefic, the European Chemical Industry Council, the European Chemical Industry is preparing to meet the looming 30 November Reach chemicals registration deadline.

President of Cefic, Christian Jourquin, stated, “Companies are doing their utmost to comply with Reach and to meet the first registration deadline. The industry has been actively involved in the establishment of Reach as well as its implementation, which applies to thousands of substances.”

According to Cefic, strong overall cooperation among Europe’s €450bn chemical industry, the EU Commission and ECHA has helped resolve many problems relating to Reach registration.

But according to Cefic, many companies face “an array of unprecedented requirements that producers find costly and time consuming. Small- and medium-sized enterprises especially have experienced problems related to the lack of expertise required to complete complex regulatory tasks.”

Cefic director general Hubert Mandery added: “Besides the resource issue, the cost burden especially hits the bottom line of small- and medium-sized firms, who represent more than 90% of all chemical companies.

“The concerns of SMEs should be taken seriously into consideration, as the following two registration phases for lower tonnage substances will be significantly more burdensome for them. It’s in the industry’s interest that Reach be workable, practical and … affordable.

“Furthermore, we want to see the plethora of European substance-related legislation consistent with Reach.”
