The Liverpool Pancreatic Biomedical Research Unit (PBRU) is a new research unit, funded in 2008 by the NHS National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), to investigate pancreatic diseases. The PBRU is built around the world class excellence of pancreatic research in Liverpool, incorporating the strengths of the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals Trust, the University of Liverpool and associated Industrial partners. The purpose of the PBRU is to translate basic pancreatic research into a clinical setting. Overall the research will focus on three themes: drug discovery and development of new interventions; application of new diagnostic and imaging strategies and validation of new biomarkers and screening protocols.
The PBRU has set up a Pancreas Clinical Research Facility (PCRF), which specialises in early phase clinical trials of novel diagnostic approaches and novel compounds for the treatment of pancreatic diseases. This facility is the first of its kind in the country. The PCRF is located close to the two pancreatic inpatient wards at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. The state-of- art facility will monitor both inpatients and outpatients up to level 2 care. Certain studies will also involve healthy volunteers.
Apart from clinical trials managed within the PCRF, the PBRU has also adopted several other clinical trials, which are linked to our Good Clinical Laboratory Practice and Drug Discovery Laboratories. The PBRU works closely with the Liverpool Cancer Trials Unit, Liverpool Cancer Research-UK Centre and the Liverpool Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre, which is part of the UK Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre Network.
We wish to appoint 3 Specialist Research Nurses, who will work within the exciting and challenging environment of the PBRU, being responsible for patient care and the management of clinical trials in the PCRF. Furthermore, the Specialist Research Nurses will assist in the execution of other clinical trials adopted by the PBRU.
