Jason Johal is recruiting for an Upstream Processing (USP) Team Leader to join a multinational clinical-stage cell & gene therapy research company focused on the development and commercialisation of gene therapies for debilitating disorders based on a next-generation AAV gene therapy platform. This is a permanent role based in the vibrant, cosmopolitan city of Munich, Germany and offers an excellent salary up to €75,000 and a good benefits package.

The Company: The organisation has a strong reputation for their technical and strategic expertise within the cell and gene therapy market across Europe and places a strong emphasis on innovation, ability to make a difference to the patients, as well as the ability to apply your skills and develop new ones by collaborating with a multidisciplinary team. They will provide you with promising and exiting research projects in an environment that strongly values your development. Their gene therapy treatment builds upon their own pioneering work and their proprietary AAV capsid which is optimised to effectively transduce human liver cells and thus provide sustainable, high levels of the desired protein.

The Role: Reporting directly to the Director Process Development you will be responsible for the management of the USP Team, consisting of scientists and engineers and the implementation of new technologies and process development related research. As the main international contact both internally and externally for the USP Team you will be responsible for all QA & technical related queries and will provide training to team members. You will be expected to provide input for technical decisions that will impact on the company's CMC development strategy and will define and design experimental projects relevant for new platform technologies according to the company development program. Other duties will include taking responsibility for large scale and GMP requirements throughout process development, introducing new methods and technologies to improve USP vector production, budgetary control and responsibility for CAPEX planning. Travel to partner CMO/CRO's will be required.

Your Background: We are looking for a candidate with experience gained in industry within a GMP-regulated field and experience of leading a team of scientist and technicians. This is a hands-on role with 50% of your time expected on the bench so it is essential that you are still comfortable within the lab and are able to cultivate different cell types and then scale up. Experience of working with viral vectors is essential (AAV would be highly advantageous) and it is expected that you will hold a PhD or MSc in a biological, biotechnological or chemical subject. A distinct knowledge of cellular biology as well as expertise in cell cultivation (including media analysis and media design), bioreactor technology and bioreactor scale-up and a profound background in virology and molecular biology are also required. Technical experience in viral vector manufacturing and training in QBD, DOE, PAT would be preferred. Any hands on experience in generic DSP applications (FPLC, TFF, UC) and cross-cultural management experience especially in supply-chain management would be advantageous.
