CK Group are recruiting for a materials development scientist, to be actively involved in the development of the next generation of force sensing materials, on behalf of a global developer of innovative composite products, to be based at their sitein Sedgefield on a permanent basis.

You will be able to get involved in the whole research development lifecycle from early-stage research to pilot development and technology transfer to manufacturing. You will work closely with the rest of thematerials development team, but will also independently plan, conduct, and analyse experimental work.

A successful project will see the development of a unique, patent-protected material system incorporated into the mass production of sensingsolutions and further into customer products. Beyond materials development, the scientist will be also encouraged to take a holistic approach to sensor design and engage with the broader R&D team on material properties and requirements.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Planning, conducting, and interpreting experimental work.
  • Presenting results and findings to various audiences in the company clearly and efficiently.
  • Combining theoretical knowledge and experimental findingsto rationalise experimental design and development directions.

  • Collaborating with colleagues (scientists and engineers) to accelerate new materials development.

  • Capturing innovation and generating patents and/or other IP forms that protect inventions and enhance the value of the company.

  • Developing optimised processes required to make new materials and influencing the selection of equipment and tools required for the successful transfer to mass production.

To be considered for the position you will have the following skills and expertise:

  • Experience of successfully planning, conducting, and analysing scientific experiments.
  • Qualified to a minimum of BSc level (and ideally PhD), or possess equivalent experience, inchemistry, chemical engineering, materials science or engineering.
  • Knowledge of polymer chemistry and properties and an understanding of composite materials is strongly desired, including electrical and mechanical properties.

  • Experience of developing printable materials and familiarity with the characterisation techniques used to evaluate printed electronics would be advantageous.
