CK Group are recruiting for a Material Scientist to join a technology company working with graphite, at their site based in Runcorn on a full time permanent basis.

The Company: The company creates technology which is primarily used in water treatment, across a range of industry sectors including specialty chemical, agrochemical, pharmaceutical and more. Their product offering has grown into a range of systems designed to suit individual treatment needs. They are now recruiting for a Material Scientist to research, design, modify, test, and develop materials to advance they company's technology and products and intellectual property. This role would suit an established scientist with proven experience of working with graphite, and the company offers a salary of circa £30-35,000pa depending on skills and experience as well as 25 days holiday, employer pension contribution, subsidised gym membership, life insurance and employee assistance programme.

Location: The Graphite Material Scientist role will be based at the company's site in Runcorn, easily commutable from Warrington, Widnes, Manchester, Liverpool and surrounding areas.

Materials Scientist Role: Your main duties will be:

  • Materials formulation and material physical characterisation
  • Working with suppliers to assess the effects of graphite manufacturing routes
  • Determining the effects of impurities and investigating the potential benefits of additives
  • Materials testing including planning and running experiments to measure material adsorption capacity
  • Managing experiments to assess electrochemical efficiency
  • Generate FMEA related data
  • Reactor design and testing such as optimising reactor design and operational process parameters
  • Test reactors with monopolar and bipolar cell designs, and test alternative electrode materials
  • Graphite manufacture/ synthesis and formulation development
  • Present technical progress and timing against delivery targets

Your Background: Theideal candidate for this role will have the following skills and experience: Essential:

  • Proven hands on experience gained working with graphite - essential
  • BSc or MSc degree (or equivalent) from a materials science or chemistry background
  • Expertise with surface science/ surface engineering/ surface chemistry of graphite including adsorption -essential
  • Excellent knowledge of heterogenous catalysis and organic chemistry
  • Experience of managing high level R&D projects and of workingin multidisciplinary teams The following would be advantageous:

  • Good knowledge and experience of materials synthesis and development

  • Basic knowledge of electrochemistry (cyclic voltammetry, Impedance spectroscopy)
  • Electrochemical device testing (polarisation curve)
  • Knowledge of graphene
  • Good knowledge of oxidation mechanism for organics
