James Horne is currently recruiting for an experienced Cell Biologist to join a dedicated team of Research Scientists providing an outsourced service to one of the top ten largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. This role is based at the client's research and development site in Surrey which is commutable from London, Oxford, Reading and Guilford.

The purpose of this role is to run cell-based functional assays in support of neuroscience drug discovery projects and to make a major contribution to neuroscience functional assay experimental platform development.

Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Maintenance and manipulation of human iPSC cells, differentiation into neurons and performing biochemical, imaging or functional assays in these cells.
  • Working with other cell systems, for example primary neuronal culture or immortalised cell lines and manipulations of these cells (e.g. viral transfection, siRNA knock-down, genetic manipulation, co-culture) to increase target validation for various molecular pathways.
  • Measurement of biochemical or functional parameters in cells using techniques including microscopy, live fluorescence imaging, immunocytochemistry, calcium imaging, morphology, live/dead cell assays.
  • Designing, validating, troubleshooting, and performing molecular, biochemical and cell-based assays, including high content imaging assays to address key molecular mechanisms and test new chemical entities.
  • Performing assays that might include: AlphaScreen, ELISA, MSD, SDS-PAGE.
  • Provide written and oral communication of work in lab reports and team meetings.
  • Accurate recording of all practical work: completion of electronic lab notebook to company procedure quality standards.
  • Maintaining a tidy and efficient laboratory environment and ensuring health and safety standards are met.

You are required to have the following qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Hands-on experience in aseptic cell culture technique including iPSC culture.
  • Ability to analyse and interpret biochemical and cell-based imaging data and identify errors.
  • Capable of independently designing experiments, generating data, interpreting results and documenting work.
  • BSc/MSc with further experience or PhD in a neuroscience-related subject (or equivalent).
  • Working knowledge of key biochemical techniques, cellular assays and cell biology.
  • Sound knowledge of experimental design and statistics for biology experimental work.
  • Understanding of biology lab safety requirements.
