The current COVID-19 pandemic has forced most of the nation into lockdown, and meant that many of us have been working from home for almost a full year. As a result, the boundaries between our personal and professional lives have become significantly blurred.
Whilst this lessens the risk of spreading the COVID-19 virus, when technology fails, you can’t get hold of your colleagues and background noise is proving to be too distracting, it can be hard to remain motivated and productive. Once our mental health deteriorates, this then has the potential to majorly impact our work. Therefore, it is essential to know how to manage stress whilst working from home to prevent burnout.
Here are four ways you can do this.
- Make the most of your lunch break
Be sure to take some time away from your desk to eat your lunch and relax, rather than eating whilst you continue to work. This will increase your levels of energy and motivation once you resume work in the afternoon, after taking some well-deserved time out for yourself. You could go out for a walk, listen to some music or read a favourite book during your free time if you want to stay occupied.
- Prioritise and organise your day
It is always a good idea to plan out the day ahead, as this will allow you to visualise the tasks that need to be completed and feel more organised. However, be careful not to schedule more than what is manageable and realistic, as this could split your concentration and lead to you becoming overwhelmed. Focus only on what is important to ensure that your sense of accomplishment remains high. On top of this, don’t be afraid to say “no” to certain projects that are not essential or risk you losing sight of your priorities.
- Don’t let your workday overrun
It can be tempting to put some extra work in, check emails or login to messaging apps during the evenings. However, it is important to maintain your standard working hours as much as possible. If you can, keep your evenings free for yourself so that your sleep schedule is not compromised and your energy levels are high for the following day.
- Socialise outside of work
Although we are unable to physically go out and visit colleagues, friends and family members at the moment, technology really can be our knight in shining armour. Platforms like Zoom and Skype are great for staying in contact with those important to us, and taking the time to socialise virtually outside of work will help you to wind down and de-stress.
