Food Packaging

Channel 4 Dispatches recently aired a documentary about the Truth About What’s In Your Food. It examined the fact that British consumers are moving away from a fast food eating culture and are spending more money on premium ready meals and foods that claim health benefits. Dispatches investigated these packaging claims by subjecting them to much laboratory analysis. The results showed that labelling can be grossly inaccurate by as much as 20% and that “healthy” options can have more calories than ordinary ranges. They examined the accuracy of nutritional information on the packaging of many ready meals and found a dramatic difference between what the labels state and reality such as the percentage of fat. It was found that flawed legislation allows misleading information to be featured on packaging and that in fact animal feed is more highly regulated.
