REC supports bid for international STEM students

The House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee has published a report on International STEM students which has included recommendations made by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation.

Recommendations made by the REC were based on evidence they had collected which highlighted the struggle to fill key, in-demand STEM positions across the UK, traditional filled by international candidates.  The change in international student VISA’s has seen far fewer applicants for specialist STEM positions resulting in vital skills gaps. The desperate need for a wider pool of talent to ensure UK businesses can continue to forge ahead formed the basis of the REC’s recent advice to the House of Lords.

The recommendations, which included the reinstatement of the Post Study Route, are being considered so the struggle to fill specialist STEM jobs may soon be over.

What is Recruitment Process Outsourcing (RPO)?

Over the past couple of weeks we have been giving you an overview of what outsourcing is and introducing one of the core services offered through outsourcing – Functional Service Outsourcing (FSO).

To catch up on those articles click on the relevant links below:

This week we are looking at Recruitment Process Outsourcing which is the other main outsourcing solution offered by CK Aspire.

Recruitment Process Outsourcing is more in depth than our FSO service as it involves outsourcing all or part of your Human Resource function to an external specialist. This is usually a solution companies adopt if they are experiencing issues such as:

  • More vacancies than they can manage

  • A cost per hire that is too high

CK Aspire can take on part or all of your recruitment process so that your business can continue to perform, and your staffing concerns are taken care of.

This flexible solution offered by CK Aspire can help you regardless of the size of your business. So if your business is currently experiencing recruitment challenges contact CK Aspire on 01438 743 047 or info@ckaspire.com

This week we are giving you an introduction into Functional Service Outsourcing (FSO), one of the services our CK Aspire division offers as part of its outsourcing offer.

FSO is the Outsourcing or Management of a team or departments or function to a third party leaving you free to concentrate on your core business.  How we do that is up to you, as we are 100% flexible but we do also offer 3 core service options, which are:

  1. Insourcing –  we provide you with temporary support to complement your existing workforce.

Should you need to outsource an entire project, we would work alongside you to identify the skills required, and then build and manage the team to deliver your project. This team would work to your SOPs, within your budget and also give you real time access to results.
  3. Functional outsourcing –  we supply you with an entire department or function, leaving you free to concentrate on the core area of your business.

Rosy outlook for science jobs

The results of the latest employer “Jobs Outlook” published by REC are in and they make very positive reading for job seekers within the scientific fields. The report is published following a survey of over 400 employers throughout the UK and some of the interesting results include:

  • Nearly half of all employers (48%) plan to increase the use of contract employees in the short term (3 -6 months)
  • More than 75% of all employers expect to recruit additional permanent staff in the medium term (within 1 year)
  • Only 9% of UK hirers have spare capacity to take on more work with their current staffing levels
  •  More than 1 in 4 employers state that they will give their staff a pay rise this year

This positive news is reflected across CK Science where we have seen a 10.3% rise in the number of vacancies registered in the first ¼ of 2014.

Have you heard about outsourcing?

Outsourcing has evolved and is now fairly commonplace in the industry, especially now there are examples of successful projects being showcased. However, we are still often asked what it is.

The action of outsourcing is to get an external company to provide you with workforce solutions to cover small teams, projects, departments and whole functions. Many companies now choose to outsource so they can benefit from the cost and time efficiencies, increased productivity and flexibility of their new workforce.

The CK Group offers a workforce outsourcing solution through their CK Aspire division, which delivers high quality workforce support to the science, technology and pharmaceutical market by providing external departmental or bespoke project management services for customers.

These labour solutions are offered through two separate services: Functional Service Outsourcing (FSO) and Recruitment Process Outsourcing (RPO).

Next week on the news area of the CK Science website we will give more information about Functional Service Outsourcing (FSO).

In the meantime find out more about outsourcing here

Strongest Rise In Permanent Vacancies Since 2010

The latest KPPG/REC report on jobs has highlighted a number of very interesting changes in the labour market. We are continuing to see very strong growth in the number of permanent vacancies within the scientific and engineering sector with the demand for engineers increasing dramatically and these two areas growing at a faster rate than most other industrial sectors.  The growth in these is the second strongest since the information was first collated in 1997, and interestingly most growth has been in the North of the UK with London and the South East being weakest.

There has also been increased demand for temporary staff in the scientific and engineering fields but at much lower levels than the permanent side. This reflects the increased confidence within the science and manufacturing sectors as a whole with companies now preferring to invest on staff, rather that taking them on a short term basis.

The knock on effect of this growth in demand is starting to have an effect both in terms of candidate availability, which is diminishing, and salary inflation, as we are starting to see some pressure on salaries and hourly rates, and we expect this to continue over the next few months. However it is worth  noting that the level of salary/rate increase is still below the national inflation rate.

Overall this is very positive news for our sectors and we are starting to see a broader range of roles, with much of the growth in the permanent sector.

With between 70-80 students attending the lecture, Alex took the time to discuss the key areas that really concerned students at this stage of their education; such as how to write a CV, how to make your cv stand out on job boards and what they can do to find work post graduation.
