CK support Sheffield University Hallam 2016 STEM careers fair

On Wednesday 26th October CK Group’s science and engineering recruitment teams exhibited at the STEM – placement and graduate jobs fair, which was held by Sheffield Hallam University.

The event aims to support students who are currently on STEM related courses to find employment on graduation. With the volume of people working within STEM steadily dropped it has become a real risk for the long term growth of the UK economy. This has driven an increase in promotional campaigns and events such as this aimed at encouraging young people to enter the sector.

The STEM – placement and graduation jobs fair was a great opportunity for students and graduates to talk to companies from across South Yorkshire to discuss how best to start their career. Our Recruitment Consultants felt there was an immense amount of enthusiasm from other exhibitors and were impressed by the volume of students that attended, eager to find out as much information as possible.

CK exhibiting at 2016 RQA Annual Conference

CK Group are exhibiting at the RQA 2016 Annual Conference which is being held at the Hilton Brighton Metropole Hotel between 9th and 11th November on stand 14.

This year’s event is looking at the emerging challenges facing the industry as they embrace the demand for increased innovation, transparency and risk-based approaches versus the need to reduce costs and display more efficient and effective working practices. As a result the role of the QA professional is changing, no longer is the traditional role suitable for today’s market needs. Instead organisations are looking for a proactive, solution orientated professional who focusses on how to add value to their business.

CK have participated in the Annual Conference for many years and have long been an advocate of the RQA’s value’s. With a long history of helping to source and place highly qualified QA professionals into pharmaceutical, biotechnological, medical device and scientific organisations, CK has a natural affinity to the goals and objectives of the RQA.

CK’s Jason Johal and Jim Gleeson will be on hands throughout the event on stand 14 to provide advice and support to employers and QA professionals.

  • Willey job network
  • Access Science jobs.

Our results showed that from these job boards a total of 575 chemistry jobs were published last week, with:

  • 505 permanent roles
  • 70 temporary or contract roles

This week we have tracked an unexpected and disappointing 25% decline in the number of analytical chemistry jobs advertised. Whilst temporary roles have maintained their numbers, permanent roles have been affected hugely with 201 fewer roles available this week. We do not currently have an explanation for this decline. However on investigating further, we have seen that job numbers behaved exactly the same this time last year. What is driving this annual pattern is unknown at this time but we will explore further.

Analytical Chemistry Jobs Market – 27th September 2016

Each week, CK Science is providing a snapshot of the analytical chemistry jobs market. Over time, we aim to give you a picture of how it changes and evolves, and most importantly, how this may impact on you depending on overall demand and seasonal changes. So whether you are an Analyst looking for a new science job or an employer seeking new Chemist to join your team, we hope that this market snapshot helps you with your decision making.

Our tracking is based on each week screening some of the UKs leading vacancy boards for how many analytical chemistry jobs have been advertised within the previous week.

This summary was completed on 27th September and relates to adverts posted for Analytical Chemists on:

  • New Scientist
  • Monster
  • CV Library
  • Emedcareers
  • Pharmiweb
  • Willey job network
  • Access Science jobs.

Our results showed that from these job boards a total of 605 chemistry jobs were published last week, with:

  • 528 permanent roles
  • 77 temporary or contract roles

The drop experienced last week was very much a temporary measure as this week we have tracked a 5% growth. This has brought the total volume of science jobs to the highest we have seen since March this year. This has had a knock effect on permanent roles which has seen a 13% growth on last week’s numbers. Unfortunately interim roles have declined by 26% bringing this week’s numbers to less than 100 for the first time in nearly 5 weeks.

  • Access Science jobs.

Our results showed that from these job boards a total of 571 chemistry jobs were published last week, with:

  • 466 permanent roles
  • 105 temporary or contract roles

There has been a small decline in job numbers this week that has predominantly affected the volume of permanent science jobs. However, due to the fact the decline only accounts for 3%, we do not think it’s a sign of changes in the market place.

CK reward University of Sunderland graduate

CK Group has been an advocate of University of Sunderland and their academic programme for many years. Proactively supporting students through their course through a series of training sessions aimed at providing them with the essential skills required to search and find employment after graduation. In addition, CK sponsor the student placement prize by rewarding the student who gets the highest score based on their placement project and endorsement from their industry mentors.

This year we are pleased to announce the winner as Tom Armstrong. Tom completed a placement at Bristol Myers Squibb as an Analytical Chemist and utilised the content of this project to produce a poster that won a prize at the Emerging Analytical Professionals Conference. Tom, who graduated with a 1st Class degree in BSc BioPharmaceutical Science, also won two further rewards during his final year and credits his degree course for giving him the best foundation to start his career.

Sunderland born Tom has now joined Eurofins as part of an insourcing project at Astra Zeneca. The experience gained during his degree and placement year has been invaluable in him being able to perform successfully in his new role. He continues to extol the benefits of his placement year for not only persuading him to leave his beloved home town, but also for the advantage it gave him securing the role and for helping him to establish a network of industry professionals.

The BSc BioPharmaceutical Science course now offered at University of Sunderland provides modules that cover the all aspects of life sciences to provide a solid foundation for those first steps into industry. Students experience everything from analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, formulation through to regulatory. Championed by the Course Leader, Dr Mark Carlile, the degree has a heavy industrial slant which provides students which much needed real life understanding. As one of the first few cohorts to graduate, Tom has already noticed that employers are incredibly impressed by the breadth of subjects and the experience it provides.

As you have come to expect with these reports, following some positive news last week, this week we are reporting a decline. With an overarching 7% drop in Analytical Chemistry jobs, this has been reflected with a 5% drop in permanent roles and 13% in interim positions. It is difficult at this stage to know whether this behaviour is further signs that the sector has yet to fully recover following the Brexit result, whether its just the normal seasonal drop or a combination of them both.

There has been some stability in the scientific recruitment market over the last week with the total number of roles advertised remaining the same. Whilst there has been a small variance in numbers between permanent and interim roles it is overall rather a negligible fluctuation. We hope this is a sign that the demand for analytical chemists is on the up.

  • Willey job network
  • Access Science jobs.

Our results showed that from these job boards a total of 456 chemistry jobs were published last week, with:

  • 358 permanent roles
  • 98 temporary or contract roles

There has been a 9% drop in the total number of advertised analytical chemistry jobs in the last week. This is reflected in the continued decline in permanent work, with the vast majority of UK businesses opting for interim workers whilst the dust settles, our new PM takes control and a decision is made about how the UK will establish itself post Brexit. With so many aspects of the UK’s infrastructure coping with uncertainty we are anticipating the demand for contract recruitment to continue growing over the next six months.

Our results showed that from these job boards a total of 506 chemistry jobs were published last week, with:

  • 418 permanent roles
  • 83 temporary or contract roles

Scientific recruitment, despite last week’s glitch, really doesn’t seem to have been affected by the referendum results. Following last week’s decline there has been a 10% increase this week, with permanent roles growing by 11% and interim roles by 6%. Having anticipated a slow down in recruitment in response to the UK economic and political uncertainty, what has actually occurred has been small fluctuations but numbers not falling dramatically below this year’s average.

So whether you are an Analyst looking for a new science job or an employer seeking new Chemist to join your team, we hope that this market snapshot helps you with your decision making.

This has had a bearing on both permanent and interim roles which have dropped between 7 – 8% each. Hopefully this is a temporary glitch, and numbers will return to their normal levels over the next few weeks. We will continue tracking and will report back next week..
