Newcastle to Host British Science Festival

Newcastle will this year be hosting the British Science Festival from the 7th September.

The festival, which is hosted in a different city each year, is designed to show off the scientific credentials of the city and area. Newcastle University is hosting the festival, which has also associated itself with Northumbria University and the City Council. With a third of events focussing on university research, and trips to local landmarks such as Cragside and the Kielder Observatory, the festival is set to be very local in feel.

Run by the British Science Association, with talks from experts such as Robert Winston and Maggie Aderin-Pocock, the event has been running since 2005 and caters for all kinds of people – school groups, families and adults alike. Interactive events, talks and workshops span the week, which is set to celebrate science, engineering and technology and the effects they have on us all.

If you’re interested in these sectors, why not look at our current vacancies?

CK to be Represented at REC Summit

The CK Group is set to be represented at the Recruitment and Employment Confederation’s Skills Summit in London on the 26th June by Operations Director Liam O’Connell.

He will be representing the CK Group throughout the day, including at the life sciences workshop. The REC event, sponsored by the Telegraph, is set to bring together four sectors which are experiencing high growth and are as such essential to the current economy. The other sectors included in the day’s agenda alongside life sciences are engineering, technology and the creative industries.

With demand outstripping supply in these sectors, Liam will be attending to see how exactly it is possible to boost the amount of people who work in these sectors to meet the needs of the businesses within them. Furthermore, the workshops are intended to give attendees a chance to understand government enterprises and find ways to be involved in them to the benefit of these fields.

Chemistry is Being Celebrated Worldwide in 2011

2011 is the International Year of Chemistry, with chemistry being celebrated worldwide.

The slogan, “Chemistry – our life, our future” is driving forward events such as interactive experiments and lectures worldwide. The events are an attempt to increase public appreciation of chemistry, its ability to meet world needs, interest young people and generate excitement about the future of chemistry.

The year coincides with the 100th anniversary of Marie Curie’s Nobel Prize award, as well as the 100th anniversary of the founding of the International Association of Chemical Societies, meaning 2011 is a chance to celebrate the contribution of women to chemistry and indicate the benefits of international cooperation within the sciences.
