A day in the life of an Analytical Chemist

 

 

We recently interviewed one of our contractors, Jacob, to find out what it’s like to work as an Analytical Chemist. We asked what a general day involves, what experience and qualification are required for this job and what advice would he give to aspiring Analytical Chemists.

 

Q1. What does the company you work at do?

The company I work for specialises in creating safe products for lawns and gardens as well as hydroponic growing products.

 

Q2. What qualifications and work experience do you have?

I have a Masters in Chemistry and have seven months of analytical analysis in industrial companies.

 

Q3. What does your job involve?

My job involves regular testing of products, raw materials and intermediates on a daily basis.

 

Q4. What is a typical day like in your role?

It starts off with testing the morning samples and repeating if necessary. Then I test samples from bagging, packing and plant throughout the day advising supervisors in the factory if adjustments are required.

 

Q5. How did you get into your current job role?

I was approached by CK as they saw that I had the qualifications and some background in the field.

 

Q6. What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy being able to apply my chemistry knowledge on a daily basis.

 

Q7. What is the hardest part of your job?

The hardest part is remembering all of the different tests and specifications of each on respectively.

 

Q8. Why did you decide to pursue this career?

Because I’ve always loved chemistry and in this job I am able to use it every day.

 

Q9. What can this type of job lead on to?

More opportunities in chemistry based jobs, hopefully as a supervisor of a lab or even further.

 

Q10. What advice would you give to somebody considering this role as a career?

You must be patient and hard working and don’t panic over smashed glassware.
