The research is still at an early stage however research scientists believe it could have important implications for human health. Boosting the intake of vitamin D may have broad anti-ageing effects and in particular help prevent loss of vision and blindness in older people.

During the research study middle-aged mice treated with the vitamin for six weeks underwent changes in their eyes that led to improved vision. Levels of amyloid beta, a toxic protein linked to Alzheimer’s disease and known to be a hallmark of ageing, were also reduced in the animals’ eyes and blood vessels.

Lead scientist Professor Glen Jeffery, from the Institute of Ophthalmology at University College London, said: “Finding that amyloid deposits were reduced in the blood vessels of mice that had been given vitamin D supplements suggests that vitamin D could be useful in helping to prevent a range of age-related health problems, from deteriorating vision to heart disease.”

As reported by BBC News Online, Research Scientists revealed a potential new malaria vaccine has shown promise in animal studies, according to research. An Oxford University team is to start safety trials in human volunteers after lab tests showed the vaccine works against all strains of the parasite.

UK scientists recently found the route malaria uses to enter blood cells. They hope to target this pathway in a new approach to developing a vaccine against malaria, which kills hundreds of thousands of people a year. Several potential malaria vaccines are already being tested in clinical trials; although no vaccine has yet been licensed for use.

One possibility is to exploit a recently-discovered potential weakness in the parasite’s life cycle. A team at the Sanger Institute found in November that a single receptor on the surface of red blood cells and a substance known as “PfRh5″ on the parasite are crucial to the success of malaria in invading blood cells.

Early lab tests suggest a vaccine against the protein may prove effective, at least in animals. Dr Sandy Douglas is a Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Training Fellow from the University of Oxford told the BBC: “We have found a way of making antibodies that kill all different strains of malaria parasites. This is still early phase research in animals. The next step is to do clinical trials in people.”

If safety tests of the vaccine prove successful, clinical trials in patients could begin within the next two to three years, says the Oxford team.

Schmidt criticised the lack of effort put into trying to ignite young people’s passion for science, particularly IT, which is not compulsory past fourteen. The IT courses available at GCSE level were also criticised for teaching how to use, not how to create software. Schmidt believes the answer is to recombine art and science, as was the norm in the Victorian era. Authors such as Lewis Carroll are cited as examples; he taught maths at Cambridge whilst writing Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

The Google chairman went on to add that the separation of science and humanities, and the lack of championing of the science subjects in schools, is hurting the amount of students applying for undergraduate courses in science at university. Furthermore, though the UK sees a lot of small start-ups, most end up selling to large multi-national companies, something Schmidt says needs to change in order for Britain to re-emerge as a potential scientific leader

The QinetiQ Group, based in Farnborough, is selling off its fuel and lubricants business for £500,000, reports insidermedia.com.

The Intertek Group is to take over the UK Fuel and Lubricants Testing Business (OALTB), which QinetiQ has sold in order to concentrate on their core services, including aerospace and security. Intertek is going to bring the fuel business into the pharmaceutical and chemical division of their operations.

This is the third recent acquisition by Intertek, who have also purchased Stoke based Food Analytical Laboratories Limited (FAL) and Rechere Developpement and Consulting (RDC), based in Brussels. Wolfhart Hauser, CEO of Intertek, has said the purchases “demonstrate Intertek’s progress in its strategy to add new expertise and capabilities across the supply chain.” He later commented that the firm is looking forward “to welcoming these companies and their management teams to Intertek.”

Due to their continued success, CK Science, the UK’s leading specialist scientific and engineering recruitment consultancy, welcomed two new specialist scientific recruitment consultants to their Head Office team this week.

Due to their continued success, CK Science, the UK’s leading specialist scientific and engineering recruitment consultancy, welcomed two new specialist scientific recruitment consultants to their Head Office team this week.

Hannah Milward – Temporary Recruitment at CK Science, Chesterfield

Hannah Milward, has joined the CK Science Head Office in Chesterfield and will be focusing on temporary recruitment for the science and engineering industries. Hannah graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with a Bsc Honours in Food and Nutrition. During her course, Hannah spent her Industrial Placement Year working for Northern Foods, where, for the first six months, she worked in Quality Assurance, and for the remaining six months she worked in Technical Development.

Hannah has recently passed her probation at CK Science. On passing her probation, her Manager, Russell Oakley stated, “Hannah has been successful in passing her probationary period with CK Science. She has taken the Chesterfield temp section by the scruff of it’s neck and given it the shake up it needed, with 6 placements in the space of 3 months!!!! She has also shown great promise with her ability to consult with both client and candidates at such an early stage in her recruitment career. I am confident this will continue and I’m sure Hannah will develop her section into a extremely profitable asset for the Chesterfield office!”

Naynesh Mistry – Permanent Recruitment for the Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology and Food Industries at CK Science, Chesterfield

Naynesh joined the CK Science Head Office this week and will be focusing on permanent recruitment for the Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology and Food Industries. Naynesh has Bsc in Pharmaceuticals and Cosmetic Sciences. With a strong background in Pharmaceuticals, Naynesh has previously worked as Senior Scientist at Pfizer, an Inhalation Scientist at 3M Healthcare and a Laboratory Manager at Keele University where he was responsible for supervising 40 highly charged students! Naynesh has always wanted to get into recruitment and his interests include tennis coaching, football and learning to cook (although he says this is more of a challenge than an interest!).

Speaking of Naynesh’s arrival to CK Science, his Manager Russell Oakley stated, “The Chesterfield recruitment team are really pleased to have Naynesh on board in the Chesterfield office. We have been really busy over recent weeks and Naynesh is a much needed addition to the team, bringing inside industry knowledge and enthusiasm to the team. We are confident Naynesh will develop into a successful consultant and we all wish him well in his new role.”

As CK Science has earlier reported, here, GSK is set to expand its UK operations, adding to the current 16,000 employees throughout Britain. Two sites in Scotland and one in county Durham are being looked into as locations to create new plants. This comes at a time when other companies with UK branches are scaling back their operations. Andrew Witty, GSK’s chief executive, has said that his company wants to “have more manufacturing and do more R&D work in Britain” leading to a greater amount of tax paid by GSK.

In the next few years, GSK expects to be a “net hirer” because the UK can strike a good balance between research and development support and competitive medicine prices. GSK has moved back into the black this year, recording a £1.1 billion profit in the second quarter, meaning that they can afford the expense of reopening UK operations.

Two pharmacy benefits companies are set to merge in a multi-billion dollar deal

Two pharmacy benefits companies are set to merge in a multi-billion dollar deal, reports fiercepharma.com.

Pharmaceutical companies are beginning to worry that due to the proposed $29 billion deal that will see Express Scripts buy Medco Health Solutions, drug prices could decrease, affecting the pharamceutical compnies profits. Most who have commented on the deal, including Eli Lilly’s CFO Dernica Rice, have played down the impact the buy-out will have, with Rice saying Lilly could maintain its negotiation power through their products advantage over the generic drugs on the market.

However, Michael Luby, of BioPharma Alliance, believes the merger will mean the combined company would have “extraordinary purchasing power… [and] leverage [over] pharmaceutical companies.” Price cuts in Europe; particularly Germany and Spain, have been causing pharmaceutical companies problems, and having staved off effort from the US government over pricing, the big companies are now going to have to attempt to stop the private sector submitting the pharmaceutical sector to the same pricing measures.

Mr Cable praised the park, calling it “world beating” and “ambitious” as he opened the facility equipped with office space and laboratories. The area the park has been built in is one with a high concentration of food and environmental science businesses, and the project is expected to create around 5,000 jobs over the next fifteen years.

Mr Cable reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the science industry by agreeing to a £26 million investment into the Norwich Research Park, as business plans have been submitted to the government. The park is expected to create the jobs by expanding thanks to the investment.

The investment is expected to create up to 1,000 jobs in one of four UK plants, with Montrose thought to be the front runner due to the recent movement of biomanufacturing of several products from India to the Montrose plant. The Montrose factory also manufactures the products needed to make products that GSK inherited following its acquisition of Steifel in 2009.

Andrew Witty, GSK chief executive, praised the 280 staff at the Montrose factory for turning around what was an ailing site, up for sale at the turn of the Millennium, into a “globally competitive” production plant.

On Thursday 21st July, Roche is expected to post profits margin increases that follow on from the 4% increase from 2010 throughout the first half of 2011.

Roche has been having to streamline the business; like many pharmaceutical companies have, meaning costs have been cut and some jobs have been lost, but the predicted increase should mean that Roche can balance out the costs and possibly be able to fill those jobs that have been lost in the next few years.
