NIH’s new National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) has partnered initially with Pfizer, AstraZeneca, and Eli Lilly. The drug companies will offer up their data and investigators will have a chance to explore new uses, with a set of deal templates in place to help speed the process on 20 programs.

The investigators will have access to failed drugs to see if they can be repurposed for new uses.

The BBC News

Norwich Research Park currently specialises in biotechnology and biological research and encompasses the John Innes Centre, the Institute of Food Research and the University of East Anglia among others. Therefore they are looking to expand to the north and south of its current site in the west of the city.

The proposals could create 5,000 jobs in the next 10 to 15 years and make the already world-renowned science park a magnet for established, start-up and spin-off research companies.

The park’s project manager, Nick Goodwin, said the growth would enable it to “stand on the world stage”. The planning application for the work is due to be submitted in June.

The main roles and responsibilities for this Shift Process Technician will be day to day running of various production lines. You will:

• Ensure all operators are fully trained on how to run the lines and will be responsible for carrying out chemical trials on the production line.

Previously, when diagnosing depression, doctors have had to rely on the patients accurate reporting of their symptoms, and their own ability to interpret those symptoms. This is particularly challenging in teenagers, whose emotions are typically very up and down at this time in their lives.

Now, scientists at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine have developed the first blood test to diagnose depression and anxiety disorders. It measures a set of genetic markers which have been previously developed to diagnose depression in teenagers. The blood test can also distinguish between the different types of depression. For example it can tell the difference between a patient with major depression and a patient with depression combined with an anxiety disorder.

The study involved 28 adolescent participants between the ages of 15 and 19 – 14 of who those had major depression (they had not been clinically treated) and 14 were healthy individuals. Each of the participants were tested for 26 genetic blood markers which had been identified in previous research.  The scientists found that 18 of the 26 markers could identify those participants who had major depression and those who had both depression and an anxiety disorder.

The campaigners say that the results of public and charity-funded scientific research should be freely available to anyone who wants to read it, for whatever purpose they need it. An estimated 9,000 researchers have already signed up to a boycott of journals with restricted sharing to help revolutionise the spread of knowledge and promote an “academic spring”.

However this intervention of the Wellcome Trust, the largest non-governmental funder of medical research after the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is likely to incite it by forcing academics it funds to publish in open online journals.

Sir Mark Walport, the director of Wellcome Trust which spends more than £600m on scientific research a year, said “that they would soon adopt a more robust approach with the scientists it funds, to ensure that results are freely available to the public within six months of first publication”

The aim of the current project is to adapt the proteins found in egg shells called glycosaminoglycans to create a starch-based plastic that could then “bulk up” existing plastics and be turned into anything from shop fitting to supermarket meal trays. One aim is for recycled shell to be used in protective packaging for eggs.

Just Egg, a UK-based mayonnaise and hard-boiled egg manufacturer, uses around 1.3 million eggs every week, creating around 10 tons of eggshell waste. According to the firm, it spends approximately £30,000 ($48,000) each year sending nearly 500 tons of shells to landfills.

Therefore if the egg shells could be recycled it would be environmentally better and could save on waste management.

Please note that this QA & Development Shift Supervisor role involves working 12 hour day and night shifts on a 5 shift rota which covers the site 24 hours per day, 365 days per annum. This also includes providing cover in the event of absence of other members of the team.

The selected candidate will be able to get to work in all weather as the site cannot operate without a QADSS. A reasonable degree of physical fitness is required in order to climb gantries etc.

GKN Aerospace with its partner SCLR Lasertechnik has installed the first prototype robotic machine using laser technology to remove damaged composite structure on aircrafts. On Tuesday, Leicester City Council’s development control committee will discuss the development which planning officers have recommended for approval. The hope is that this park could provide 100’s of new jobs in the area, the scheme also includes a new supermarket to be built on land next to the science park site, which as it is understood will be run by Asda.

The first stage of the development is likely to cost £37 million but if planning consent is given tomorrow then the park could be finished by the end of the year. A city council planning spokesman said: “The proposal would have many significant positive regeneration impacts for the science park and the wider area.”

“My own view is that Lancashire has huge potential … If they had the will they could perhaps become the centre of shale gas for Europe, much as Aberdeen became the centre of oil and gas for Europe. It is not inconceivable,” Lord Browne told The Independent.

However the UK’s sole operational fracking site located near Blackpool and run by Cuadrilla  was suspended last June. The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) is examining the report and said it expected to make a decision “soon” on the future of  fracking at the Cuadrilla site and across the UK. Fracking is known as hydraulic fracturing, fracking is the process used to dislodge natural gas from shale by blasting a mixture of sand, water and chemicals into the rock.

Lord Browne, who is hopeful that the Government will approve Cuadrilla’s plans to resume fracking, said the shale gas industry “will be of enormous benefit to the nation if it works out well. We could potentially double the reserves of gas in the UK, we could add 50,000 jobs maybe, and probably even reduce the price of gas.”

GSK also announced a new manufacturing facility to be built in Ulverston in Cumbria. The biopharmaceutical facility will be its first new UK factory for 40 years.

Investment will also be made at the company’s two manufacturing sites in Scotland at Montrose and Irvine. 

These investments represent one of the largest commitments to the UK life-sciences sector in recent years.  They follow confirmation by the Government in the Budget yesterday that it will implement a ‘patent box’ to encourage investment in R&D and related manufacturing in the UK, by introducing a lower rate of corporation tax on profits generated from UK-owned intellectual property

The facility:

As a Compounding Laboratory Manager the successful candidate will lead the unlicensed medicines manufacturing department. The department is at a well established business unit with an excellent track record of quality and value for money, currently manufactures ‘special’ medicines for the NHS, private hospitals and community pharmacies throughout the UK. The department consists of approximately twenty people including two registered pharmacists, and is supported by a small team of releasing pharmacists. 

Responsibilities:

This Compounding Laboratory Manager role is a key position in the company and the person appointed will have the opportunity of growing the department to match the expectations of the customer base and placing this company in a position where they can effectively compete in a dynamic marketplace. In the first instance the Manager will report in to the Head of Non sterile production.

The role of Compounding Manager will include;

• Planning and managing production schedules
• Overseeing the formulation activity
• Supervising the costing process
• Managing the customer services function
• Meeting with key customers in NHS hospitals
• Analysing and reporting on profitability
• Improving current manufacturing systems
• Improving productivity
• Implementing a programme of continuous improvement
• Implementing appropriate staff training programmes
• Appraising all staff in the department
• Motivating the production team

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate for this Compounding Laboratory Manager role will have a degree in Pharmacy or equivalent, have line management experience and worked within a aseptic, sterile manufacturing environment.

Researchers at Georgetown School Healthcare Hub in the U.S conducted a research project using mice. In the study they found that a single gene broke down communication in the body and led to non-stop eating and rapid weight gain.

Generally after a meal, the activity of this gene transmits chemical signals down a chain of brain cells until they reach the hypothalamus, which receives the message that you are full and suppresses the appetite. However the mice which had a mutation of this gene ate twice as much as those without the mutation.

Scientists hope that identifying the gene could help with treatments for obesity which affects nearly one in four adults in the UK.
