European scientists have developed robotic fish which detects contamination and pollution in water. Click here to find out more.

As reported by the BBC, European scientists have developed robotic fish which detects contamination and pollution in water.

The pollution-hunting fish is 1.5 metres long and cost £20,000 for the scientists to develop. It is fitted with sensors which pick up pollutants leaking from ships or undersea pipelines. In fact, the fish reduced the time it takes to detect pollutants from weeks to seconds. The fish can communicate with each other, avoid obstacles, map their journey and transmit their data back to shore. Currently undertaking first trials in northern Spain, modifications will then be made to improve the large yellow fish.

Speaking of the pollution detecting project, Luke Speller, Senior Scientist as the research division of technology consultancy, the BMT Group stated, “The idea is that we want to have real-time monitoring of pollution, so that if someone is dumping chemicals or something is leaking, we can get to it straight away, find out what is causing the problem and put a stop to it.”

The project has part-funded by the EU and used expertise from scientists from the University of Essex and the University of Strathclyde. Further input came from the technology consultancy, the BMT Group and from the Tyndall National Institute and Thales Safare, which is a unit of Europe’s largest defence electronics group.

Norwich Research Park currently specialises in biotechnology and biological research and encompasses the John Innes Centre, the Institute of Food Research and the University of East Anglia among others. Therefore they are looking to expand to the north and south of its current site in the west of the city.

The proposals could create 5,000 jobs in the next 10 to 15 years and make the already world-renowned science park a magnet for established, start-up and spin-off research companies.

The park’s project manager, Nick Goodwin, said the growth would enable it to “stand on the world stage”. The planning application for the work is due to be submitted in June.

Thai company Sahaviriya Steel Industries (SSI) have reopened Redcar Steelworks.

The blast furnace at Redcar’s former Corus plant commercial property was relit in a ceremony that brought cheers from the assembled workers. The area has been associated with steelmaking for over a century and a half, but it seemed it was the end of an era when the plant The opening was made possible by the acquisition of the Redcar industrial property by Thai company Sahaviriya Steel Industries, who will now run the plant under the name of SSI UK.

This has created 1,700 jobs, including those for many workers who had previously worked at the commercial property. It is expected that this will rise in order to meet the target of producing 3.6 million tonnes of steel for export to South East Asia by the end of the year.

scientists have successfully developed a blood test that will help diagnose depression and anxiety disorders in teenagers.

As reported by the Press Association, scientists have successfully developed a blood test that will help diagnose depression and anxiety disorders in teenagers.

Previously, when diagnosing depression, doctors have had to rely on the patients accurate reporting of their symptoms, and their own ability to interpret those symptoms. This is particularly challenging in teenagers, whose emotions are typically very up and down at this time in their lives.

Now, scientists at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine have developed the first blood test to diagnose depression and anxiety disorders. It measures a set of genetic markers which have been previously developed to diagnose depression in teenagers. The blood test can also distinguish between the different types of depression. For example it can tell the difference between a patient with major depression and a patient with depression combined with an anxiety disorder.

The study involved 28 adolescent participants between the ages of 15 and 19 – 14 of who those had major depression (they had not been clinically treated) and 14 were healthy individuals. Each of the participants were tested for 26 genetic blood markers which had been identified in previous research. The scientists found that 18 of the 26 markers could identify those participants who had major depression and those who had both depression and an anxiety disorder.

The BBC News reported that the gas extraction technique “fracking” should continue but with stricter conditions.

The BBC News reported that the DECC have said that the gas extraction technique “fracking” should continue but with stricter conditions.

The technique “fracking” involves pumping water and chemicals into shale rock at high pressure to extract gas. The government sees shale gas as a valuable energy resource for the future.

Last year the company Cuadrillla had to stop fracking at its site the Bowland Basin in Lancashire as it was thought that it had caused seismic events in the area. The process was to be reviewed by the DECC, however the DECC expert review published yesterday concludes that it is safe to resume hydraulic fracturing provided that the recommended operating procedures are followed.

Cuadrilla’s Chief Executive Mark Miller said: We are pleased that the experts have come to a clear conclusion that it is safe to allow us to resume hydraulic fracturing, following the procedures outlined in the review.

As reported by The Guardian, The Wellcome Trust has added its support to a campaign to break traditional academic journals and allow free online access to research papers.

As reported by The Guardian, The Wellcome Trust has added its support to a campaign to break traditional academic journals and allow free online access to research papers.

The campaigners say that the results of public and charity-funded scientific research should be freely available to anyone who wants to read it, for whatever purpose they need it. An estimated 9,000 researchers have already signed up to a boycott of journals with restricted sharing to help revolutionise the spread of knowledge and promote an “academic spring”.

However this intervention of the Wellcome Trust, the largest non-governmental funder of medical research after the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is likely to incite it by forcing academics it funds to publish in open online journals.

Sir Mark Walport, the director of Wellcome Trust which spends more than £600m on scientific research a year, said “that they would soon adopt a more robust approach with the scientists it funds, to ensure that results are freely available to the public within six months of first publication”
