Speaking about the workers who had found work elsewhere, Dr Annette Doherty, site leader for Pfizer Sandwich, said some workers remained in the biomedical sector while others had left Kent and moved to other roles.

Pfizer said it had tried to monitor the impact of the closure announcement on colleagues and based on the voluntary responses of more than 1,000 people leaving the company had estimated that about two-thirds had left for new opportunities.

It also was reported last week that Pfizer was in detailed talks with a consortium led by London and Metropolitan about buying the site. Dr Doherty said that if the sale went ahead, London and Metropolitan would become the site owner and would rent space to other companies. Pfizer would remain, running a smaller operation in rented buildings, and three other science and technology companies were also moving in.

Laura Sandys, Conservative MP for South Thanet and Sandwich, said: “While there are still staff who have not found jobs and companies in the area who were reliant on Pfizer, almost 1,000 jobs are now secure and a new buyer for the site is in final negotiations. What seemed like a disastrous day a year ago looks a lot more promising.”

The research is still at an early stage however research scientists believe it could have important implications for human health. Boosting the intake of vitamin D may have broad anti-ageing effects and in particular help prevent loss of vision and blindness in older people.

During the research study middle-aged mice treated with the vitamin for six weeks underwent changes in their eyes that led to improved vision. Levels of amyloid beta, a toxic protein linked to Alzheimer’s disease and known to be a hallmark of ageing, were also reduced in the animals’ eyes and blood vessels.

Lead scientist Professor Glen Jeffery, from the Institute of Ophthalmology at University College London, said: “Finding that amyloid deposits were reduced in the blood vessels of mice that had been given vitamin D supplements suggests that vitamin D could be useful in helping to prevent a range of age-related health problems, from deteriorating vision to heart disease.”

In his speech at the Policy Exchange, Willets stated that some of the UK’s greatest assets are our universities, our science facilities and our researchers – Willets stated that it is therefore crucial that steps are made to help create jobs and thus boost economic growth.

Willets also stated that he wants to make Britain the best place to study science. He stated that he is keen to ensure that new scientific institutions are established with private funding due to the lack of government funding available. It is proposed that these new institutions will be a new type of postgraduate university which will focus on science and technology. UK businesses are therefore being urged to sponsor these new private universities that specialise in science. Speaking of his plans, Willets stated, “We have to bridge the gap between limited public funding and continuing strong demand for higher education and research.”

The team of scientists were lead by Professor Stefan Schlatt at Muenster University were able to grow sperm cells in a laboratory dish using germ cells – the cells in the testicles that are responsible for sperm production.

This incredible breakthrough could enable infertile men to father their own children. Speaking of the discovery, Stephen Gordon, a leading NHS male infertility consultant stated, “Infertile men naturally want to be the father of their child but at present have to accept that can’t happen. With the mouse discovery, that could now be a possibility.”

Young scientists in the UK are investigating why it is that some people hate the taste of the Christmas dinner staple, the Brussels sprout. Find out more here!

As reported by The Telegraph, young scientists in the UK are investigating why it is that some people hate the taste of the Christmas dinner staple, the Brussels sprout.

Budding scientists at Cornwell’s Eden Project will be testing their DNA to find out whether or not they have a genetic variation of a certain gene which makes a chemical within Brussels sprouts taste particularly bitter. Luckily for them, those who don’t have this mutation (it is thought that this is about half the world’s population) don’t taste the bitterness at all, meaning they can take full advantage of the nutritional goodness of the good old sprout.

This national programme is being run for the UK Association for Science and Discovery Centres (ADC) and is supported by the Wellcome Trust. The project aims to give young scientists some hands-on experience of working with DNA.

Talking of the programme, John Ellison, head of education strategy at Eden Project, said: “These workshops use Brussels sprouts and our own DNA to show how humans and plants have evolved together.

“The Eden Project provides the context to connect molecular biology with rainforest research into the plant diversity which is vital for future survival.”

Enjoy your sprouts and Merry Christmas!

As reported by BBC News Online, Research Scientists revealed a potential new malaria vaccine has shown promise in animal studies, according to research. An Oxford University team is to start safety trials in human volunteers after lab tests showed the vaccine works against all strains of the parasite.

UK scientists recently found the route malaria uses to enter blood cells. They hope to target this pathway in a new approach to developing a vaccine against malaria, which kills hundreds of thousands of people a year. Several potential malaria vaccines are already being tested in clinical trials; although no vaccine has yet been licensed for use.

One possibility is to exploit a recently-discovered potential weakness in the parasite’s life cycle. A team at the Sanger Institute found in November that a single receptor on the surface of red blood cells and a substance known as “PfRh5″ on the parasite are crucial to the success of malaria in invading blood cells.

Early lab tests suggest a vaccine against the protein may prove effective, at least in animals. Dr Sandy Douglas is a Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Training Fellow from the University of Oxford told the BBC: “We have found a way of making antibodies that kill all different strains of malaria parasites. This is still early phase research in animals. The next step is to do clinical trials in people.”

If safety tests of the vaccine prove successful, clinical trials in patients could begin within the next two to three years, says the Oxford team.

The investment will treble the production capacity of the plant and will add twelve new high-speed production lines which will be used to make coffee pods to be sold in the UK and 40 other countries across the world.

Nestlé’s plant in Derbyshire has experienced high growth over the years and is set to rise o 800 by 2013.

These newly created jobs in Derbyshire will be part of Nestlé’s first intake into their new Academy which will aim to increase the number of graduates to the company.

Prime Minister David Cameron described the announcement as “brilliant news for UK manufacturing and for the local community”.

Speaking of the announcement, Paul Gimwood, chairman and chief executive officer of Nestlé UK and Ireland, said: “The team there have really focused on quality output, efficiency and really making the best plant that we have for this type of product worldwide.

“That’s actually meant that when we’ve come to spend extra money and put extra investment in, it’s been a bit of a no-brainer to actually say the money should go to Tutbury.”

This discovery, which was made in the laboratory has sparked hopes that one day cancer patients’ own skin could be used to help fight their tumours.

The research focused on dendritic cells which are key in organising the immune response as they tell the immune system where to attack by showing identifying markets or antigens.

This study has strengthened previous research by Cancer Research UK as Dr Caeutano Reis e Sousa, and immunology expert, explains, “By showing that normal body cells can be reprogrammed to become a sub-type of dendritic cells with superior activity, this research builds on previous work by Cancer Research UK scientists using blood stem cells as starting material.”

Now this exciting discovery has been made, the real challenge now is to establish whether or not these cells which were made in the lab, can be used for cancer treatments in the clinic.

The French Pharma company, Sanofi may be cutting US and EU science jobs. Find out more here!

As reported by Business Week, the French Pharma company, Sanofi may be cutting US and EU science jobs.

The news comes as a result of a reorganisation of their R&D operations following their acquisition of Genzyme, as well as the loss of exclusivity on key drugs.

Sanofi plans to group their R&D into four ‘research hubs’ to be based in the US (Boston). France, Germany and Asia. It is hoped that this move will help to improve communication between teams and help integrate R&D operations.

As a result, both sales and R&D jobs will be cut, however, there is no news yet as to exactly how many jobs will be cut.

Like other pharmaceutical companies, in recent times, Sanofi has been taking strides to cut back staff in more mature markets (e.g. Europe and US) and is concentrating on strengthening it’s workforce in emerging markets. In fact, since 2008, Sanofi has created more that 3,700 jobs in these countries.

This news comes just as The Wall Street Journal, reports a 26 per cent rise in Sanofi’s third quarter profit which was boosted by sales in emerging markets.

As reported by the Daily Mail, artificial blood developed by UK scientists could soon be produced on an industrial scale.

The scientists, working from Edinburgh and Bristol University have successfully created millions of red blood cells from stem cells (these are taken from the bone marrow). Scientists know that cells taken from human embryos are most easy to multiply in large numbers. However, researchers have not yet managed to create realistic blood.

Once an effective technique has been developed, this artificial blood will be free from disease and could be given to anyone, regardless of their blood group. Scientists believe that this will improve blood transfusions by preventing hospital shortages. The artificial blood is also hoped to save many lives at road traffic accidents, during surgery and at war.

However, many do not agree with technique of extracting stem cells from human embryos in order to advance medical science. Therefore, as Mr Turner from the Wellcome Trust highlights, ‘There is a lot of regulatory framework to ensure that the cells are being treated with the appropriate respect and being used for genuine scientific and medical reasons and not in a trivial fashion.’
