Stomach cancer identified by breath test

The BBC has reported that a new study has revealed that a quick and simple breath test can diagnose stomach cancer.

The research study findings showed that the test was 90% accurate at detecting and distinguishing cancers from other stomach complaints in 130 patients.

The team are now running a bigger study in more patients to validate their test.

The British Journal of Cancer says the test could revolutionise and speed up the way this cancer is diagnosed.

Metallurgist – West Midlands

Hannah Milward at CK Science is recruiting a Metallurgist at a leading materials testing organisation at their site in Dudley on a temporary basis for the duration of up to 4 months.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities of this Regulatory Coordinator position will include:

  • Managing the work of the Metallurgical Technician
  • Undertaking microstructural assessment according to standards
  • Liaising with customers regarding technical and status queries on routine metallographic examination
  • Performing contract reviews
  • Ensuring that LIMS worksheets and other records are filled out correctly and in accordance with internal procedures
  • Managing routine metallographic assessment to meet customer deadlines
  • Managing duties in accordance with procedures, quality system and health and safety system
  • Assisting the improvement in the organisation and efficiency of the workplace through implementing and maintaining 5S actions
  • Organising and undertaking site testing when required
  • General duties may involve assisting in areas of testing outside of their routine operation such as mechanical testing, heat treatment, corrosion testing
  • Conducting other duties as reasonably requested by the Supervisor/Manager

Qualifications:

As Metallurgist, you will have the following qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Good general education including English and Maths with a Qualification in Metallurgy or Engineering Materials being advantageous.
  • Level 3 NVQ in Laboratory and Technical Activities is beneficial for this role.
  • A broad knowledge of metallurgy and engineering materials is essential for this role, as is an understanding of the principal metallurgical theories and principles.
  • Demonstrable experience in the preparation and microstructural examination of metals is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of relevant health and safety systems and environmental regulations as well as an understanding of relevant testing standards are beneficial for this role.Hannah Milward - Recruiter at CK Science

Project to build ‘giant’ wind turbines will create 100’s of environmental jobs

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

AEnvironmental Jobss reported by the BBC, UK and Irish ministers will today sign an agreement that will mean the some of the world’s largest wind turbines built across the Irish midlands.

According to this proposed agreement hundreds of wind turbines will be erected across the boggy midlands of Ireland. The power generated would be transferred to the UK via undersea cables that would join the grid at two points in Wales. These turbines will be 180 meters tall and they will generate energy for millions of UK homes from 2017.

The developers of the project say that thousands of renewable energy jobs and environmental jobs will be created in Ireland and the economy as a whole will benefit.

Scientific Resourcer – Hertfordshire

 Responsibilities

XRF Spectrometrist Manager – Merseyside

Victoria Walker at CK Science is recruiting for an XRF Spectrometrist Manager to join an analytical service provider to the metals and minerals industry, based in Merseyside on a full time, permanent basis.

Responsibilities:

As an XRF Spectrometrist Manager the main purpose of your role will be to take a leading role in the day-to-day management of 3 modern spectrometers and a staff base of 12.

Further responsibilities of this XRF Spectrometrist Manager will include:

  • Supporting research and development projects in support of X-Ray services to the Group as a whole
  • Occasional travel to the Group’s overseas Laboratories on X-Ray related issues is a possibility.
  • Working with PANalytical Axios wavelength spectrometers
  • Calibration and internal standardization of equipment

Qualifications:

As an XRF Spectrometrist Manager, you will have the following qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Accomplished X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometrist; A good understanding of wavelength & energy dispersive X-Ray practice and theory
  • Expertise related to the analysis of metals and minerals by wavelength & energy dispersive X-Ray techniques
  • Experience with PANalytical Axios wavelength spectrometers would be an advantage
  • A good understanding of fluxing and fused glass bead techniques
  • A good understanding of calibration and internal standardization principles
  • A good understanding of instrument performance monitoring and QC control
  • Be capable of demonstrating a proven track record in X-Ray spectrometry
  • Be familiar with the requirements of ISO 17025:2005 accreditation systems
  • Good interpersonal and management skills

Responsibilities:

As a Regulatory Section Head you will:

  • Have management responsibility for the successful operation of the Regulatory affairs, FDA submission.
  • Management of FDA submissions, including keeping up to date with FDA directives which are pertinent to the company’s submissions and future targets.
  • To co-ordinate workload and set objectives for direct reports to ensure that operational objectives of the department are met and delivered within agreed timescales.

  • Experience in either  regulatory submissions (including 510K) , Pre-IDE, Ethics, IP submission
  • Willingness to travel and work weekends (both whilst abroad and at home) to meet the companies needs.
