The research is still at an early stage however research scientists believe it could have important implications for human health. Boosting the intake of vitamin D may have broad anti-ageing effects and in particular help prevent loss of vision and blindness in older people.

During the research study middle-aged mice treated with the vitamin for six weeks underwent changes in their eyes that led to improved vision. Levels of amyloid beta, a toxic protein linked to Alzheimer’s disease and known to be a hallmark of ageing, were also reduced in the animals’ eyes and blood vessels.

Lead scientist Professor Glen Jeffery, from the Institute of Ophthalmology at University College London, said: “Finding that amyloid deposits were reduced in the blood vessels of mice that had been given vitamin D supplements suggests that vitamin D could be useful in helping to prevent a range of age-related health problems, from deteriorating vision to heart disease.”

As reported by BBC News Online, Research Scientists revealed a potential new malaria vaccine has shown promise in animal studies, according to research. An Oxford University team is to start safety trials in human volunteers after lab tests showed the vaccine works against all strains of the parasite.

UK scientists recently found the route malaria uses to enter blood cells. They hope to target this pathway in a new approach to developing a vaccine against malaria, which kills hundreds of thousands of people a year. Several potential malaria vaccines are already being tested in clinical trials; although no vaccine has yet been licensed for use.

One possibility is to exploit a recently-discovered potential weakness in the parasite’s life cycle. A team at the Sanger Institute found in November that a single receptor on the surface of red blood cells and a substance known as “PfRh5″ on the parasite are crucial to the success of malaria in invading blood cells.

Early lab tests suggest a vaccine against the protein may prove effective, at least in animals. Dr Sandy Douglas is a Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Training Fellow from the University of Oxford told the BBC: “We have found a way of making antibodies that kill all different strains of malaria parasites. This is still early phase research in animals. The next step is to do clinical trials in people.”

If safety tests of the vaccine prove successful, clinical trials in patients could begin within the next two to three years, says the Oxford team.

The French Pharma company, Sanofi may be cutting US and EU science jobs. Find out more here!

As reported by Business Week, the French Pharma company, Sanofi may be cutting US and EU science jobs.

The news comes as a result of a reorganisation of their R&D operations following their acquisition of Genzyme, as well as the loss of exclusivity on key drugs.

Sanofi plans to group their R&D into four ‘research hubs’ to be based in the US (Boston). France, Germany and Asia. It is hoped that this move will help to improve communication between teams and help integrate R&D operations.

As a result, both sales and R&D jobs will be cut, however, there is no news yet as to exactly how many jobs will be cut.

Like other pharmaceutical companies, in recent times, Sanofi has been taking strides to cut back staff in more mature markets (e.g. Europe and US) and is concentrating on strengthening it’s workforce in emerging markets. In fact, since 2008, Sanofi has created more that 3,700 jobs in these countries.

This news comes just as The Wall Street Journal, reports a 26 per cent rise in Sanofi’s third quarter profit which was boosted by sales in emerging markets.

This will create 1,000 jobs.

As Andrew Witty, CEO of GSK explains, the plan comes are a result of tax breaks on innovation introduced by Chancellor George Osbourne, ‘Because of changes in the UK tax regime, it will be our intention to bring more activity to Britain and take advantage of the situation here and increase our contribution to Britain. If it [corporation tax] is going to come down over the next few years, it will attract us to pay more tax here.’

The global pharma are considering Cumbria, County Durham and two locations in Scotland for their new factory. A decision is expected to be made in May.

The Intertek Group is to take over the UK Fuel and Lubricants Testing Business (OALTB), which QinetiQ has sold in order to concentrate on their core services, including aerospace and security.
This is the third recent acquisition by Intertek, who have also purchased Stoke based Food Analytical Laboratories Limited (FAL) and Rechere Developpement and Consulting (RDC), based in Brussels. Wolfhart Hauser, CEO of Intertek, has said the purchases “demonstrate Intertek’s progress in its strategy to add new expertise and capabilities across the supply chain.” He later commented that the firm is looking forward “to welcoming these companies and their management teams to Intertek.”

Two pharmacy benefits companies are set to merge in a multi-billion dollar deal

Two pharmacy benefits companies are set to merge in a multi-billion dollar deal, reports fiercepharma.com.

Pharmaceutical companies are beginning to worry that due to the proposed $29 billion deal that will see Express Scripts buy Medco Health Solutions, drug prices could decrease, affecting the pharamceutical compnies profits. Most who have commented on the deal, including Eli Lilly’s CFO Dernica Rice, have played down the impact the buy-out will have, with Rice saying Lilly could maintain its negotiation power through their products advantage over the generic drugs on the market.

However, Michael Luby, of BioPharma Alliance, believes the merger will mean the combined company would have “extraordinary purchasing power… [and] leverage [over] pharmaceutical companies.” Price cuts in Europe; particularly Germany and Spain, have been causing pharmaceutical companies problems, and having staved off effort from the US government over pricing, the big companies are now going to have to attempt to stop the private sector submitting the pharmaceutical sector to the same pricing measures.

The investment is expected to create up to 1,000 jobs in one of four UK plants, with Montrose thought to be the front runner due to the recent movement of biomanufacturing of several products from India to the Montrose plant. The Montrose factory also manufactures the products needed to make products that GSK inherited following its acquisition of Steifel in 2009.

Andrew Witty, GSK chief executive, praised the 280 staff at the Montrose factory for turning around what was an ailing site, up for sale at the turn of the Millennium, into a “globally competitive” production plant.

A £12 million grant is to be made to ten promising researchers who are expected to become prominent in the field of cancer. It is intended to assist with the researcher’s careers and possible breakthroughs they could make. Two leading university lecturers, four scientists and four junior research scientists will be the recipients of the grant.

Applicants are being taken, with the deadline at the end of July drawing closer. Dr David Scott, director of science funding at Cancer Research UK, believes the grants show his organisation “is serious about supporting new scientists at the start of their careers.”

A science park in Runcorn is bidding to win Enterprise status and create thousands of jobs, reports runcornandwidnesworld.co.uk.

If the Daresbury Science and Innovation Park is granted this status, then it could generate up to 10,000 skilled jobs and lead to £150 million investment. Holton Council leader Clr Rob Polhill has said the status would “take Daresbury to the next level.”

Around 100 companies have offices, workshops and laboratories on the site, and the massive investment would mean that even more specialist office, lab and technical spaces would be developed. The site opened in 2006 and is a world class centre for cutting edge sciences and high-tech businesses.

Pharmaceutical company Pfizer’s decision to separate certain divisions could lead to a larger break up in order for further growth, including in employment

Pharmaceutical company Pfizer’s decision to separate certain divisions could lead to a larger break up in order for further growth, including in employment, reports forbes.com.

The splitting of the animal health and baby formula businesses from the main company is the beginning of a process to unlock value within the company. Two other sectors will be kept in order to raise their value to $46 billion combined, though investors had hoped the company would split into five distinct divisions.

The two that have broken off were the obvious choices; the animal health business is worth nearly $4 billion so can stand on its own, and the nutrition side is the one that investors were most eager to see separate.

Though some investors may be disappointed that Pfizer hasn’t split all its divisions at once, it means that sectors that could not currently compete on their own have time to grow to the point where they can be world leaders in their own right, potentially creating a large number of jobs worldwide.

Andrew Witty, chief executive of GSK is said to have not ruled out Montrose as a possible location for the new factory. The Montrose site current has 230 permanent and 50 part-time staff on it’s payroll.

Speaking of the Montrose site, Witty stated, “It is extraordinary to think that a few years ago the Montrose plant was close to shutting.

But the workforce applied great brain power to cost and process efficiently and now we are bringing work back from India – and Montrose is where it is going.

This is a workforce that has outmanoeuvred the threat of closure.”

Other sites shortlisted as possible locations for the new biopharmaceutical site include Barnard Castle, County Durham, Irvine and Ulverston.

They are the first company to announce help recruits in this way.

The company’s chief executive, Andrew Witty announced the news on Sky News. He stated that the scheme was not restricted to scientists, chemists and pharmacists, but will also be available to lawyers, economists and all of the other top class graduates that could help the pharmaceutical company. He said, “The biggest reason we are doing this is that we want to get the absolute best possible graduates we can to work for GSK,” he told the programme. This is a great way for us to try and ensure we get that next brilliant scientist.”

As of next year, university tuition fees will triple for undergraduates so this is great news for budding scientists who are interested in working in the Pharmaceutical industry.

It is hoped that the announcement of GSK’s scheme will will encourage other companies to follow suit and help their recruits with crippling tuition fees. Thus ensuring that potential top talent will continue with their education.

GSK’s programme will costs them around £3 million per year and trainees will be required to stay with the company for several years until the fees have be repaid.
