CK Science Sponsor Kilimanjaro Climb

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Mount_Kilimanjaro_2007CK Science, the leading specialist scientific recruitment consultancy, will be sponsoring a charity climb up Kilimanjaro.

The climb has been organised to raise money and awareness for children’s hospice, Hope House in Oswestry. It takes over £4million each year to run the hospice and they are currently caring for over 320 terminally ill children and their families. This doesn’t just include the physical, psychological and spiritual care for the children affected, but also bereavement support, in all its forms, for the siblings and other family members left behind. Hope House also offers bereavement services to the larger community, helping a wide number of children over an extremely traumatic time in their lives. At this time 93 families are receiving post bereavement support.

DSCF0965Hope House currently received only £300,000 of funding from the government each year and the other £3,700,000 is raised by events such as this.

Monday, April 26th, 2010
Sir James Dyson, One of the World's Leading Engineers

Sir James Dyson, One of the World's Leading Engineers

Dyson – the second highest UK patent filer after Rolls Royce plans to create 350 science and engineering jobs in Wiltshire. New positions will include graduate design engineers, mechanical engineers and acoustic engineers.

The new engineers, mainly university graduates, will work at Dyson’s laboratories in Malmesbury, where machines are conceived, researched and designed.

Last month, Sir James Dyson, one of the world’s leading design engineers, called for more investment in science and engineering industries in order to make the UK Europe’s leading hi-tech exporter.  “We need to inspire and enlighten people: science and engineering can change lives, society and the economy,” he said.

Dyson employs more than 2,500 people worldwide, with 1,000 of those working in Wiltshire. The main areas of expertise include microbiology, fluid, mechanical, electrical, electro-magnetic compatibility, thermal, acoustic and software engineering. The company have seen a surge in their research and development efforts since 2005, with new technologies including the Dyson Air Multiplier fan, the Dyson Airblade hand dryer and Dyson’s smallest-ever vacuum cleaner – DC26 City.

Sir James said: “I am extremely proud of the new technology developed by our engineers in Malmesbury. “It is vital that Dyson – and the UK – continues to invest in the nation’s engineering talent if we are to stay ahead. With excellent young aspiring scientists and engineers in our schools it falls to companies such as Dyson to encourage this future generation.”
