This Microbiologist Analyst is initially a six month contract which is covering maternity leave.

• The performance environmental monitoring of the clean room facilities on site
• The sampling and analysis of the quality water systems
• Ensuring that media and reagents are tested and approved within required timelines

Billions of pounds are spent annually on nitrogen fertilisers to support crop production to feed the world’s population. Ammonia-oxidising’ microbes rapidly convert ammonia to nitrate, which is washed out of the soil before it reaches crops for which it is intended. This leads to losses to farmers estimated at over $15 billion per year and nitrate-polluted drinking water.

Over the past hundred years, all strains cultivated have only grown in standard laboratory conditions at higher, neutral pH, and not in acidic conditions.

Research performed at the University of Aberdeen has identified a novel organism which performs the process of ammonia oxidation in acidic conditions, and has also demonstrated that this organism is abundant and globally distributed in acidic soils.

A large part of this work involved the analysis of soils from the Scottish Agricultural College’s Craibstone Estate outside Aberdeen, to recognise the importance of the site from which the organisms were obtained, and the university at which the microbe was first cultivated, the new organism has been named Nitrosotalea devanaterra, which means an ammonia-oxidising ‘rod’ from soil in Aberdeen, incorporating Devana, the Roman name for Aberdeen. It is part of the Domain of microbes known as Archaea.

The research team has now been awarded a £0.5 million, 3.5-year research grant by the Natural Environment Research Council to investigate the highly unusual physiology of Nitrosotalea devanaterra and to find out more about its potential role in the loss of ammonia-based fertilisers and nitrous oxide gas emissions from soil!

Description of the role:

The successful candidate for this Microbiology Analyst role will have a clear understanding of and the ability to work within, strict cGMP guidelines in a busy pharmaceutical Quality Control Lab and will be experienced in the following:

• Analysis of bio burden and endotoxin present in water, steam and products (powder and aqueous)
• Identification of microorganisms using standard identification techniques eg Vitek and API
• Environmental monitoring of ISO Class 8 and 9 Cleanrooms
• Growth and maintenance of microbiological cultures
• Preparation and sterilisation of microbiological media
• Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills

Qualification:

The ideal candidate for this Microbiology Analyst role should hold an honours degree in Microbiology (2:1 or above, or Equivalent) and have strong proven industrial experience gained in a GMP pharmaceutical manufacturing environment.  They should also have experience of Smartlab

The climb has been organised to raise money and awareness for children’s hospice, Hope House in Oswestry. It takes over £4million each year to run the hospice and they are currently caring for over 320 terminally ill children and their families. This doesn’t just include the physical, psychological and spiritual care for the children affected, but also bereavement support, in all its forms, for the siblings and other family members left behind. Hope House also offers bereavement services to the larger community, helping a wide number of children over an extremely traumatic time in their lives. At this time 93 families are receiving post bereavement support.

Hope House currently received only £300,000 of funding from the government each year and the other £3,700,000 is raised by events such as this.

It is hoped that the Kilimanjaro climb will raise a minimum of £4,000. This money will go a small way to help the staff of Hope House ease the final days of terminally ill children.

The world-class pharmaceutical company, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), is set to spend £500 million on a new state-of-the-art biopharmaceutical manufacturing plant and on improving its facility in Ware, Hertfordshire. The move comes after a pre-Budget report reduced the rate of Corporation Tax on 10pc on income arising from UK patents.

It seems that over the past few months, GSK and the drug industry have been in talks with the government about the proposal, which has been labeled a “patent box”. Speaking of the ‘patent box’, Andrew Witty, chief executive of GSK, said: “The patent box is exactly the sort of active, long-term and creative support that we need from the Government to ensure that the UK remains an attractive place for highly skilled sectors such as pharmaceuticals. For GSK, assuming the new regime will apply to patents currently under development it will have the immediate impact of making the UK a priority area for future investments, particularly in manufacturing.”

There is much speculation regarding the location of the biopharma site, but Stevenage, Ulverston and Barnard Castle, where the company has existing sites, are all in the running. Products that could be developed there include Arzerra, for leukaemia, and Syncria, for type 2 diabetes.

As reported in the Japanese newspaper, Nikkei, Pfizer, one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies, are considering marketing generic drugs in Japan, starting as early as 2011. A spokesman from Pfizer’s Japan unit stated, “Pfizer is considering entering the generic drug market in Japan as it seeks to diversify its business operations to build a stronger earnings structure.”

The Japanese drug division will initially market 70 of Pfizer’s off-patient medications. Further along the line it is planned that the company will apply for sales licenses for generic drugs based on other companies’ expired patents. This could be a profitable move for the pharmaceutical company as Japan’s generic drugs market is expected to reach 515 billion yen in the year ended March 2010.
