Environmental chemists are much needed in most jobs, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry

Environmental chemists are much needed in most jobs, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry, reports ibnlive.com.

All industries need environmental officers to assess the effect the business has on the environment, and find ways to reduce that impact. The job essentially involves knowing the effects of chemicals (or whatever the business deals with) on the environment. For example, how can a pharmaceutical firm safely and effectively dispose of waste products or leftover stock?

Industries are taking a much more proactive role in environmental issues, so that the role of chemists is becoming prominent. Pharmaceutical, chemical and waste disposal industries all obviously need environmental chemists, but recently even IT firms are beginning to employ people to monitor their environmental impact. A solid grounding in chemistry is of great importance, and it is often recommended that those looking into such a role go on environmental courses.

As reported by the Telegraph, the chief of the global pharmaceutical company, Pfizer has announced his plans to take early retirement.

As reported by the Telegraph, the chief of the global pharmaceutical company, Pfizer has announced his plans to take early retirement.

Jeff Kindler, who has held the position of chief executive since 2006, stated that “the combination of meeting the requirements of our many stakeholders around the world and the 24/7 nature of my responsibilities, has made this period extremely demanding on me personally”.

It is planned that the head of Pfizer’s biopharmaceuticals business, Ian C Reed will be succeeding Mr Kindler.

Under Kindler’s stewardship, the pharmaceutical company shed more than 14,000 jobs, as well as closing manufacturing plants. The company also paid $68bn (£43bn) for rival Wyeth last year in an effort to invigorate its pipeline of new products.

It is hoped that the £500,000 study, which will be funded by GSK, will lead to the development of new drugs that will target how the internal body clock regulates the severity of inflammation. The team at the University of Manchester will be headed up by Professors Andrew Loudon, David Ray and Kath Else. This team will work closely with colleagues in the Discovery Biology group at GSK.

Speaking of the collaboration, Professor Loudon or the faculty of life sciences, stated:

“Many inflammatory diseases are highly rhythmic in presentation and often worse at night. We believe there is also a strong rhythmic control. It has long been speculated that asthma and other inflammatory conditions have an underlying clock mechanism controlling the severity of the disease. These clocks are all over the body, including in cells responsible for the immune response in the lung. In addition the way we metabolise drugs is highly rhythmic. Our aim is to gain a sufficient understanding of this process so we can target key parts with specific new drugs.

“We are working with GSK not only to develop new drugs to alleviate symptoms but also reveal optimal timing of therapy, known as chronotherapy. This is a new and exciting area of research. It is being taken very seriously in France, for example, where researchers have for some time been studying the importance of timing of chemotherapy in cancer. This study is just one at the beginning of an exciting new phase in circadian rhythm research.”

Inflammatory diseases of the lung are a major cause of mortality world-wide. In the case of COPD, the progression of this inflammatory disease is irreversible once commenced. In the UK 27,478 people died as a result of COPD in 2004. Other diseases with an inflammatory aspect include asthma, which is a predisposition to chronic inflammation of the lungs in which the airways are reversibly narrowed.

Looking for a new science job? Subscribing to RSS feeds can help compliment your traditional job hunting methods by regularly providing you with relevant science job vacancy listings.

What is it?

RSS or ‘Really Simple Syndication’, is a simple way to distribute information to a wide number of people.

How can it help me in my job search?

When job hunting it is likely that you will regularly visit industry specific job boards. The content of these websites changes all the time. Having to continually go back to each website to check for new job listings can be tedious and time consuming.

Subscribing to the websites RSS feed pretty much solves this problem as it allows you to keep informed of the latest content of the sites you are most interested in. This saves you time as you don’t have to visit each site individually. This is obviously a great job hunting tool.

How do I subscribe to an RSS feeds?

In order to grab RSS feeds from all of your favourite websites and job boards you will need to download a web-based feed reader such as Google Reader.

2. Scroll down the page until you see the RSS logo

As reported in the Telegraph, Shell, a global group of energy and petrochemicals companies, are now planning to cut another 1,000 oil jobs on top of the 5,000 job losses already announced.

Tuesday saw the announcement that the oil company’s full year results indicating their performance was worse than their rival BP’s, sparking plans to embark on $1bn programme of further costs cuts on top of the $2bn identified last year. The company is also planning to sell around 15pc of its refineries which convert crude oil into petroleum products.

Refineries set to be closed include:

Shell’s last UK refinery and producer of 15pc of the country’s pertrol – Stanlow, Cheshire.

Montreal refineries.

German refineries.

Operations under review include:

New Zealand

Costa Rica

Panama

Sweden

Speaking of the full-year results, Peter Voser, Chief Executive of the oil company, stated, “Our downstream business [refining and retail] is in the toughest refining environment we’ve seen in decades. Margins were squeezed by increasing oil prices on the one hand and weak demand from our customers on the other.”

Thirty new laboratories and offices for 300 research scientists are to be built in Norfolk with a £5m investment fund.

The fund of £5m has been provided by the following companies:

Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) will provide £500,000

The East of England Development Agency £1.4m

Greater Norwich Development Partnership £1m

The University of East Anglia £500,000

The remainder will come from other Norwich Research Park partners

The aim of the scheme is to attract new science companies to the area and is the first stage of a plan to create 5,000 jobs in research by 2021. The new development is on land donated by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) at Norwich Research Park. There will also be space for new start-ups and for existing firms to expand.

The science facilities are due to open in the summer and will be managed by a new joint venture company Colney Innovations Limited. David Parfrey, BBSRC Director of Finance and Director of Colney Innovations Limited, said: “Within one kilometre of this facility, there are no fewer than 2,700 research scientists focussed on health, food and environmental sciences – a unique resource in this country. By 2021, we plan to create the facilities for 5,000 new science-related jobs on Norwich Research Park which will make Norfolk one of the world’s largest single-site scientific research centres.”

In recent years, pharmaceutical companies have come under increasing pressure to change their approach to providing cheap drugs to people in the developing world. Many have faced fierce criticism for their failure to drop prices for HIV drugs while millions died in Africa and Asia, for defending patents. However, it seems the Chief Executive of GSK, Andrew Witty has a plan to fix this problem.

As reported in the Daily Telegraph, GSK is planning to share scientific data and laboratories in a bid to wipe out tropical diseases, such as malaria. Andrew Witty, the Chief Executive of GSK who recently spent time in some of the world’s poorest continents, including Africa, said the global pharmaceutical company has a “genuine appetite to change the landscape of healthcare for the world’s poorest people”. In fact, it is estimated that Africa carries 70% of the world’s healthcare burden, but only receives 3% of healthcare resources.

In 2009, GSK announced it would create a patent pool for some of its existing products and not-for-profit-pricing on a variety of drugs for the developing world. In addition, the pharmaceutical giant plans to release 13,500 of its compounds that are believed to have the potential to be developed into new malaria treatments.

GSK will also operate an ‘Open Lab’ scheme whereby the company will open one of its laboratories in Tres Santocs, Spain, for non-GSK scientists to use to investigate treatments for other tropical diseases. The lab will accommodate 60 scientists who will benefit from £4.9m of funding from GSK to help with their research. Speaking of this innovative ‘Open Lab’ scheme, Witty stated, Speaking before leaving for New York, Mr. Witty said: “Malaria is a dreadful disease which stalks the fields and villages of many parts of the least developed world. It has been an intractable problem for decades. Enormous progress has been made through bed net programmes, for example, but a really effective treatment has been somewhat elusive. We need to enlist the help of scientists around the world and to make it as easy as possible for that brilliant scientist, wherever they are, to find that initial spark that could be the breakthrough.”

New Year’s resolutions aren’t just for keeping fit or quitting smoking. Why not use yours to commit to finding yourself that dream science job in 2010?

Here are some tips to help that New Year’s resolution last longer than any other:

New Year is a great time for reflection, so think about why you really want a new science job. Why is it that you want to move on? Are you satisfied with your career path? What is it that you don’t like about your current job? What do you like about your job?

Be careful not to set yourself unrealistic goals. If you do, you might become demotivated when you don’t achieve those goals.

Revamp your CV with a fresh set of eyes. To help you do so, please click here.

Put the feelers out – tell friends and family that you are in the market for a new science job.

Create a great Linkedin profile. Linkedin is an excellent way for you to create your online brand and essentially showcases your strengths to the world. To help you create a great Linkedin profile that will pave the way to your next science job, click here.

Sign up with a specialist scientific recruitment agency such as CK Science. Our specialist scientific recruitment consultants are dedicated to finding all our candidates the perfect science job for them and will do a lot of the hard work for you!

Focus your job search: Use search engines such as Google and Bing to find your next science job by searching for keywords that match your interests and the location where you would like to be based. By narrowing your search in such a way, your job hunt will be more focused and the search results will be more relevant to you.

Don’t give up! And do stay positive. Your attitude will potentially make the difference between a job offer and a job rejection.
