Yorkshire Biotech Company Hosts In-Vitro Testing Event

Monday, May 24th, 2010

blue-molecule-reverses-300x241The Yorkshire-based Biotechnology company, Kirkstall Ltd is hosting an event which will discuss the latest research into in-vitro testing.

Kirkstall Ltd develops innovative testing technologies at its Kroto Innovation Centre laboratories based in Sheffield. The biotech company will be hosting the event to discuss new developments in human-cell based testing in Montpellier in France on May 26th and May 26th.

Topics covered will span from regulatory procedures to reducing the need for animal testing. Not only this, but Sheila MacNeil, a professor at the University of Sheffield will be presenting her paper on 3d tissue engineering models for research and development.

Kirkstall recently received by than £100,000 of equity funding following its involvement in Grant Thornton’s Investing in Health programme. The funding has enabled the biotech company to further develop its technologies whilst building on its reputation. This has lead to the biotechnology company to win its first significant three-year contact in toxicity testing.

Managing Director of Kirkstall, Malcom Wilkinson, has stated, “We’ve had a fantastic response to the event so far with more than 90 people registered to attend. The key reason there is so much interest is that there are some serious unmet needs at the moment in toxicity testing which our technologies can address.

“It is a great opportunity to bring together leading researchers from the industry and also shows the benefits of working with academic research teams and key opinion leaders in the biotechnology market place.”

Inflation Jump Impacts the Science and Engineering Industries

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

DNA StrandsAs reported on the Times Online website, in April 2010, inflation hit a 17-month high of 3.7 per cent. This was well above the Bank of England’s 2 per cent target.  This increase in inflation has had an knock-on effect on the science and engineering industries.

BAE Systems: The defence group has purchased four shipyards in the US for £238 million from Atlantic Marine, a privately held company. The yards have generated profits of $38 million.

Larsen & Toubro: The Indian engineering company has reported impressive quarterly results and is expecting a 20 per cent growth in revenue in the current fiscal year. This has been due to a pickup in orders which has sent shares surging.

Pfizer: The US pharmaceutical giant has announced that it will cut 6,000 pharmaceutical jobs. Read more at CK Clinical.

AstraZeneca: The pharmaceutical group has said to have settled it’s US patent dispute with Teva Pharmaceuticals, the Israeli generics company. AstraZeneca will allow Teva to sell a generic version of their Crohn’s disease drug, Entocort.

Ark Therapeutics: The gene therapy company has ended discussions about the sale of the company. However, they are still in talks about selling different parts of their business. Another blow for the company was their failure to get approval in Europe for Cerepro, a brain tumour treatment.

University Science Jobs to Face Cuts

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Process_Development_ChemistAs reported on the Financial Times website, science departments will be hardest hit by cuts in academic science jobs as universities are forced to react to the squeeze in public funding. This has sparked concern that the UK economy will face a shortage of scientific expertise.

A recent survey conducted by the Financial Times of over 40 universities revealed that there is plans to make cuts in science, technology, engineering and mathematics departments in universities across the country. A total of 99 of 131 academic institutions will face a cut in funding in the year 2011, according to the Higher Education Funding Council for England.

The cuts in university science jobs reflect the difficulties in maintaining subjects which require extensive facilities. Richard Lambert, Director General of the CBI stated “Science subjects are more expensive to teach than arts subjects, but they are of huge value to the economy.”

The results of the survey have brought about fears among business leaders and scientists that Britain could have insufficient science experts in its future scientific workforce to drive economic growth forward. Gail Cardew, head of programmes at the Royal Institution, one of Britain’s most renowned scientific bodies, said: “By 2014 there will be more than 2m extra jobs which need Stem skills. Where are these people going to come from if universities are going to make cuts in science teaching?”
