Sanofi and Dendreon Battle for UK Market

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

Sanofi, a leading pharmaceutical company, has launched new cancer drug Jevtana in the UK, reports inpharm.com.

EMA approval was granted after extensive phase III trials which indicated the drug extended the life of men suffering from a type of prostate cancer considerably. It also slowed the time it took the cancer to progress compared to standard chemotherapy drugs.

However, Sanofi will face competition from US firm Dendreon, as they seek to launch their drug Provenge into the European market. Ultimately, Provenge extends the patient’s life further and reduces the risk of death by nearly 25%, though it would cost £25,000 more to treat a single patient than Jevtana, so would struggle to be able to convince NICE that it is worth the extra cost.

Novartis to Cut UK Pharmaceutical Jobs

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

As reported by the BBC, The Swiss-based pharmaceutical company, Novartis are reportedly planning to close their drug development and manufacturing operations in Horsham, West Sussex, leading to  hundreds of cuts to pharmaceutical jobs.

This site currently employees 950 staff and this is set to reduce to 400 within just two years. It produces approximately 60 different formulations of drugs. Staff will be retained who work on developing respiratory drugs in Horsham. Those focused on gastrointestinal medicines will be relocated to their units based in Cambridge, Massachusetts and Basel in Switzerland.

The announcement comes after a series of cuts by pharmaceutical companies across the UK. Including, Pfizer who are to close their research and development centre in Sandwich, Kent – potentially cutting up to 2,400 posts. In addition, both AstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithKline are shutting down sites across the UK.

Novartis have disputed the notion that their plans to close the Horsham site is linked to the decline in attractiveness of the UK in terms of innovation. General Manager, Sue Webb stated, “With significant changes in healthcare systems aimed to contain or cut cost, this critical assessment and the subsequent potential changes to the Novartis UK organisation are key to maintain significant investment in innovative drugs and our research efforts in the UK.”

The Swiss-based pharmaceutical company plan to maintain their manufacturing sites based in Grimsby, Liverpool and Dundee.

CK Clinical at the DIAThis year, the DIA (Drug Information Association) chose Monaco and its state-of-the-art Grimaldi Forum to hold it’s 22nd Annual EuroMeeting, and CK Clinical, sister company of CK Science, had the pleasure of attending.

The DIA Annual EuroMeeting is the largest event of its kind in Europe.  From the 8-10th March 2010, 3,000 professionals from biopharmaceutical industry, contract service organisations, academic research centres, regulatory agencies, health ministries, patient organisations and trade associations, descended on Monaco.

CK Clinical’s first visit to the DIA Conference was a resounding success. Pharmaceutical jobs were brought in across all sectors, and the conference definitely acted as a brilliant springboard kick off our campaign to enter the European market.

We also ran a prize draw to win an Apple iPod Touch, the winner being a Departmental Manager from Novo Nordisk in Denmark. Thank you to everybody that entered.

056The Grimaldi Forum was an impressive waterfront venue, filled with daylight and a stunning glass entrance. A perfect venue to network with clients. Monaco was incredible with Ferrari’s, Mercedes Benz and Bentleys everywhere you looked. The hotel even had its own helipad!

We are very much looking forward to attending and exhibiting at next year’s DIA Conference in Geneva.
