Process Development Scientist Job Description:

As Process Development Scientist, you will work within a small group of scientists on lab scale process optimisation activities for the downstream processing area in support of the biotechnology product pipeline. The role will be both office and lab based and will require the successful applicant to contribute to the success of the group through design, execution and analyses of experimental activities.

The key responsibilities of this Process Development Scientist position will include:

• Delivering key development goals through hands-on experimentation and demonstration at lab scale.

• Designing and analysing experimental regimes using sound statistical techniques.

• Regularly communicating plans and status to key stake-holders and working flexibly to overcome issues and barriers encountered.

• Ability to interact with scientists, technicians, engineering, analytical support and other operations support personnel.

• Experience in the operation of lab or pilot scale chromatography and tangential flow filtration equipment, specifically GE Akta systems and Sartorius or Millipore TFF packages.

• Possess a working knowledge of analytical techniques required for protein purity assessment, including HPLC and ELISA methods.

• Ability to communicate effectively and build strong working relationships at all levels in the organisation.

• Ability to operate in a cGMP environment and produce technical documentation to high standards.

• Degree or equivalent in scientific or engineering discipline, preferably with a biotechnology focus

• Experience in the use of statistical software to design experimental approaches and analyse the data generated

The Telegraph

The process of fracking (hydraulic fracturing) involves pumping water and chemicals into shale rock at high pressure to extract gas. Energy companies say the use of fracking will lead to cheaper supplies.

The chairman of the Environment Agency Lord Smith told BBC Radio 4′s Today programme that he would not stand in the way of fracking in the UK, as long as certain requirements were met, arguing that “it could be part of the answer” to the UK’s energy demands.

He also said “the source of a domestically available gas supply would, of course, be potentially very beneficial for our energy needs. It could provide energy security, which we don’t necessarily have when we import gas from abroad. It could be affordable,”

The job:

The company have openings for a number of chemists at different levels to work either on days or on shifts in analysing bitumen, oil and petrochemicals.

As a Chemist you will be required to collect samples from external sources which will involve climbing ladders and working in confined spaces.  It is a high throughput environment with quick turnaround times and the analysis will involve GC, AA,IR, UV and Karl Fischer.

Qualifications and skills:

The BBC News

Norwich Research Park currently specialises in biotechnology and biological research and encompasses the John Innes Centre, the Institute of Food Research and the University of East Anglia among others. Therefore they are looking to expand to the north and south of its current site in the west of the city.

The proposals could create 5,000 jobs in the next 10 to 15 years and make the already world-renowned science park a magnet for established, start-up and spin-off research companies.

The park’s project manager, Nick Goodwin, said the growth would enable it to “stand on the world stage”. The planning application for the work is due to be submitted in June.

Assystem have successfully won order from Rolls-Royce for jet engines and thus need to effectively double the size of their site in Derby in order to keep up with demand.

The engineering consultancy currently has two sites, one in Pride Park and the other at Wyvern Business Park. They also have a team based at the Rolls-Royce campus in Sinfin and are also planning to open a new office in the City which will employ 100 people.

The company also has impressive plans to ensure the professional development of their engineers by setting up an in-house training institute for graduates and apprentices. This is expected to start in 2013.

Pete Brown, Regional Operations Manage at Assystem, said: “In the next three years, I expect we will be taking on more than 300 people across the Midlands and the majority of those will be based in Derby.

It has come to a point where we no longer want to rely on contract labour to fulfil our commitments.

Ensuring we have the skills for the future means we need to employ a lot more skilled people and bring in more graduates.”

This year, around 70 graduates in engineering and business will be given full-time jobs at Assystem.

The Yorkshire Post

Mr Antony Odell the managing director of Tissue Regenix said it and other science firms need a dedicated science park, where they can grow and develop as a cluster, to retain skills and wealth in Yorkshire.

The company recently raised £25m to commercialise its innovative technology.  Currently they are outgrowing its space at York Science Park. Mr Odell also said “We are looking at premises in York and Leeds. There’s not a dedicated bio park in Leeds”

Leeds City Council said it has narrowed down five possible sites to develop a healthcare science park. The sites include Leeds Valley Park, Logic Leeds, Thorpe Park, Hawks Park and Thorp Arch Estate near Wetherby.

Job Summary:

This Senior R&D Scientist role will be to conduct research into and develop a wide range of new products for diagnostic microbiology with an emphasis on establishing novel molecular diagnostics.

Purpose/Objective:

As a Senior R&D Scientist you will carry out investigations related to both the improvement of existing products, and the improvement of manufacturing procedures and resolution of manufacturing problems, as well as working towards the achievement of recognition of significant new products through publication and presentation of external evaluations.

The primary focus of research will be the development of novel targets and probes for pathogenic micro-organisms with an emphasis on pathogens in human clinical disease.

The successful applicant will be expected to play a leading role in the development of a portfolio of molecular assays integrating a novel platform with forefront diagnostic assay.

The ideal candidate for this Senior R&D Scientist role will have a knowledge of nucleic amplification and extraction techniques is essential, combined with experience in conventional microbiological diagnostic methods.  Experience of primer design and bioinformatics software and databases would be advantageous

During the research study middle-aged mice treated with the vitamin for six weeks underwent changes in their eyes that led to improved vision. Levels of amyloid beta, a toxic protein linked to Alzheimer’s disease and known to be a hallmark of ageing, were also reduced in the animals’ eyes and blood vessels.

Lead scientist Professor Glen Jeffery, from the Institute of Ophthalmology at University College London, said: “Finding that amyloid deposits were reduced in the blood vessels of mice that had been given vitamin D supplements suggests that vitamin D could be useful in helping to prevent a range of age-related health problems, from deteriorating vision to heart disease.”
