Liverpool Science Park Receives a Boost in Biomed

Tuesday, August 21st, 2012

The £25 million North West Fund for Biomedical has secured eight desks for start up businesses in the Liverpool Science Park, reports placenorthwest.co.uk.

20 investments have so far been made in innovative bioscience companies who are attempting to get products to market. 40% of the £25 million investment has to be put into Merseyside due to pre-existing agreements. Spark Impact, who manage the investment, will look to help benefit the new companies moving into the Science Park.

Dr Penny Attridge, the senior investment director at Spark, believes that the companies are given an “excellent position to grow their businesses” in an environment where many other biomed companies are located. The life sciences sector, which already employs 4,000 people within Liverpool, is only expected to grow with this further investment.

UK Scientists Develop New ‘Super Broccoli’

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

As reported by Yahoo!, UK scientists have developed a new ‘super’ broccoli which could help to protect against heart disease.

The scientists, from the Institute of Food Research, were lead by Richard Mithen. Mithen stated that when the broccoli is eaten, cholesterol is reduced in the blood stream, which could help protect against heart disease.

The broccoli is said to contain two to three times the normal amount of glucoraphanin – this works by breaking down fat in the body, thus stopping it from clogging the arteries.

The ‘super broccoli’ was developed by cross breeding traditional British broccoli with a wild Sicilian variety and a dose of glucoraphanin. This process took 14 years and now the broccoli has been granted patent by EU authorities. It is due to hit UK shelves this month!
