The agreement will allow early-stage biotech companies and entrepreneurs to gain access to both the laboratory facilities at The Babraham Research Campus, and the co-working community at the ideaSpace. This will therefore add an exciting new component to the start up ecosystem in Cambridge.

Babraham traditionally helps early stage biotech companies and entrepreneurs through programmes like the Biotechnology Investment Forum and the Cambridge Bio-Academic Showcase. However, this new collaboration would allow the Institute to reach a new audience – entrepreneurs from ideaSpace.

Entrepreneurs at ideaSpace will now be able to essentially partake in a spot of ‘hot-labbing’ – whereby they get part-time access to the laboratory facilities at the Babraham Institute. ideaSpace has been mainly high tech and software focused, but the new ‘hot-labbing’ agreement will allow them to attract members from other sectors.  This is explained by Dr Belinda Clarke, director of External Relations at ideaSpace, “The superb facilities at Babraham can help ideaSpace support a wider range of members from different sectors who require such specialist facilities.”

Plans are to be put forward in October and funding will be received from the Regional Growth Fund. University of Lincoln director Andrew Stevenson says that the centre “will attract world experts.” He added that the research centre will “help… producers become more efficient.” The centre is intended to take on students applying for undergraduate and post-graduate degrees as well as researchers and staff in current Lincolnshire businesses.

The centre will costs between £7 million and £10 million, and is expected to create 70 jobs directly, and over 200 jobs in the area. Chief executive of the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society, Mark Farmer, said that the plans “will put Lincolnshire on the map as a world-leader in a very important research sector.”

The QinetiQ Group, based in Farnborough, is selling off its fuel and lubricants business for £500,000, reports insidermedia.com.

The Intertek Group is to take over the UK Fuel and Lubricants Testing Business (OALTB), which QinetiQ has sold in order to concentrate on their core services, including aerospace and security. Intertek is going to bring the fuel business into the pharmaceutical and chemical division of their operations.

This is the third recent acquisition by Intertek, who have also purchased Stoke based Food Analytical Laboratories Limited (FAL) and Rechere Developpement and Consulting (RDC), based in Brussels. Wolfhart Hauser, CEO of Intertek, has said the purchases “demonstrate Intertek’s progress in its strategy to add new expertise and capabilities across the supply chain.” He later commented that the firm is looking forward “to welcoming these companies and their management teams to Intertek.”

Two biomedical companies, Alchemy Healthcare and Future Medical Technologies, are to each receive £50,000 from the North West Fund for Biomedical, reports pharmatimes.com.

The North West Fund is run by venture capital firm SPARK Impact and supplies debt and equity funding to small and medium sized businesses in the North West of England. Alchemy Healthcare has developed a nasal device for administering treatments in order to avoid injections. The investment they will receive will be used to “complete various elements of tooling and a modest clinical trial,” said Ian Harrison, the firm’s founder. They also hope to receive the results soon and receive further investment.

Future Medical Technologies has developed a polymer to mimic cartilage that is used to help arthritis, improving patient care. The investment will be used to speed development of the product and gain further regulatory approval. Dr Yousef Taktak has called the investment a “great opportunity.”

The products being bid for include over the counter painkillers and vitamin supplements. These sales are the product of GSK’s reduction of non-core products announced in February, representing 10% of the consumer healthcare business. Bids for the products are expected on 8^th August, but will be negotiable. CEO Andrew Witty expects the deals to close in the fourth quarter of 2011 before adding that GSK will be looking for the best deal for shareholders to benefit.

Rival companies are unlikely to bid for all the products GSK is looking to offload, worth a maximum of around £2 billion. However because the products will not be sold as a single body, analysts believe that GSK will not be able to make that amount. The lack of coherence in the products on sale, other than, as one analyst says “stuff that GSK doesn’t want,” also means it will be difficult to sell the portfolio for such an amount in one go.

Environmental chemists

All industries need environmental officers to assess the effect the business has on the environment, and find ways to reduce that impact. The job essentially involves knowing the effects of chemicals (or whatever the business deals with) on the environment. For example, how can a pharmaceutical firm safely and effectively dispose of waste products or leftover stock?

Industries are taking a much more proactive role in environmental issues, so that the role of chemists is becoming prominent. Pharmaceutical, chemical and waste disposal industries all obviously need environmental chemists, but recently even IT firms are beginning to employ people to monitor their environmental impact. A solid grounding in chemistry is of great importance, and it is often recommended that those looking into such a role go on environmental courses.

Our client is currently seeking to recruit an Assay Scientist to work with them on a permanent basis at their site in Liverpool.

As Senior Assay Scientist, you will be involved developing and maintaining an extensive portfolio of bioanalytical assays across a range of therapeutic areas for the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and healthcare sectors.

Reporting to the Laboratory Director, working as Senior Assay Scientist your main responsibilities will include:

• Providing professional, scientific and technical support to laboratory team.
• Liaising with the Laboratory Director, lead on identifying and developing new assays, products and services.
• Preparation of research and scientific documentation in support of assay development, system and service validations and process changes.
• Providing specialist and scientific knowledge and expertise to the clinical trials team in developing the company’s clinical trial capabilities and performance.
• Liaising with Laboratory Manager to ensure the effective management and delivery of clinical trials within the laboratory to specified commercial and contractual specifications.
• Ensuring effective management and operation of laboratory instrumentation, sample processing and reporting and all other general laboratory activities.
• Liaising with Quality Manager, ensure all laboratory staff and systems operate effectively within the Quality Management System.
• Liaising with the Data Manager, ensure the effective management, analysis, control and security of all data generated by or received by the laboratory.
• Contributing to the wider scientific and commercial development of the company through the Group Scientific Committee and specified project work.

The ideal candidate for this Senior Assay Scientist role will be educated to degree level or equivalent, or higher in a Pharmaceutical or Biomedical subject and have postgraduate bioanalytical and scientific laboratory experience. A strong track record in developing new bioanalytical assays (LCMS) from first principles to implementation is also required. Entitlement to work in the EEA is essential.
