The prize was awarded to Emily Rivers. Emily completed her placement year at Southend University Hospital. The placement was one that Emily successfully secured herself, and was unpaid.

In order to generate some much needed cash Emily made money by:

Training as a phlebotomist and working part-time in the clinic

Working as part-time Medical Laboratory Assistant in the evenings

Emily was holding down 3 jobs during her placement year. Despite this, she still successfully completed her portfolio well within the time period and impressively gained a Distinction at the City and Guilds Licentiateship. Speaking of her achievement, Emily’s supervisor said that she was an asset to the department and had the potential to “take her career far”.

Benefits of the Industrial Placement Year

Completing a placement year is a great way for students to not only gain invaluable work experience but also to increase your employability. Research shows that 70 per cent of employers prefer students with work experience.

Taking a placement is also a useful way for you to explore possible career opportunities and help you make potentially valuable contacts to help you once you have graduated.

The University of Hertfordshire has a dedicated Graduate Futures Team to help students get placements within the scientific industry.

It is hoped that the £500,000 study, which will be funded by GSK, will lead to the development of new drugs that will target how the internal body clock regulates the severity of inflammation. The team at the University of Manchester will be headed up by Professors Andrew Loudon, David Ray and Kath Else. This team will work closely with colleagues in the Discovery Biology group at GSK.

Speaking of the collaboration, Professor Loudon or the faculty of life sciences, stated:

“Many inflammatory diseases are highly rhythmic in presentation and often worse at night. We believe there is also a strong rhythmic control. It has long been speculated that asthma and other inflammatory conditions have an underlying clock mechanism controlling the severity of the disease. These clocks are all over the body, including in cells responsible for the immune response in the lung. In addition the way we metabolise drugs is highly rhythmic. Our aim is to gain a sufficient understanding of this process so we can target key parts with specific new drugs.

“We are working with GSK not only to develop new drugs to alleviate symptoms but also reveal optimal timing of therapy, known as chronotherapy. This is a new and exciting area of research. It is being taken very seriously in France, for example, where researchers have for some time been studying the importance of timing of chemotherapy in cancer. This study is just one at the beginning of an exciting new phase in circadian rhythm research.”

Inflammatory diseases of the lung are a major cause of mortality world-wide. In the case of COPD, the progression of this inflammatory disease is irreversible once commenced. In the UK 27,478 people died as a result of COPD in 2004. Other diseases with an inflammatory aspect include asthma, which is a predisposition to chronic inflammation of the lungs in which the airways are reversibly narrowed.

This year, the DIA (Drug Information Association) chose Monaco and its state-of-the-art Grimaldi Forum to hold it’s 22nd Annual EuroMeeting, and CK Clinical, sister company of CK Science, had the pleasure of attending.

The DIA Annual EuroMeeting is the largest event of its kind in Europe. From the 8-10th March 2010, 3,000 professionals from biopharmaceutical industry, contract service organisations, academic research centres, regulatory agencies, health ministries, patient organisations and trade associations, descended on Monaco.

CK Clinical’s first visit to the DIA Conference was a resounding success. Pharmaceutical jobs were brought in across all sectors, and the conference definitely acted as a brilliant springboard kick off our campaign to enter the European market.

We also ran a prize draw to win an Apple iPod Touch, the winner being a Departmental Manager from Novo Nordisk in Denmark. Thank you to everybody that entered.

The Grimaldi Forum was an impressive waterfront venue, filled with daylight and a stunning glass entrance. A perfect venue to network with clients. Monaco was incredible with Ferrari’s, Mercedes Benz and Bentleys everywhere you looked. The hotel even had its own helipad!

We are very much looking forward to attending and exhibiting at next year’s DIA Conference in Geneva.

10 ways to banish those pre-interview nerves.

1. Prepare!

- Type out potential interview questions and prepare answers for them.

- Use the STAR technique when answering questions. Describe the situation, then the task, then the actions and finally the results you attained. This will prevent you from answering interview questions vaguely, ensuring you get to the point.

- Create short stories outlining your main successes for each employer you have worked for. It is useful to use the format of (Problem-Analysis-Result, or Situation-Action-Response). These also make great bullet points on your résumé!

- One day before your interview, pack your bag with everything you might need – paper, pens, your CV, mints, a bottle of water etc.

- Prepare your outfit – dressing smartly will ultimately increase your confidence and help banish their nerves.

2. Role playing: Practice the night before an interview. Put on your interview clothes, sit in front of a mirror and run through the questions the interviewer is likely to ask you. This may sound silly, but it will really help cut down on your nerves.

3. Get a good night’s sleep! Feeling tired the next day will only make you feel more worried and less prepared – increasing your stress even more!

4. Have a good breakfast: It might be difficult to eat on a churning stomach, but food it good for the brain and will help you remain focused throughout the interview. Make sure you eat at least one hour before your interview to give your food enough time to digest.

5. Perhaps the interviewer will be nervous too? Consider the interview from your interviewer’s point of view: Undoubtedly they will feel the pressure to ensure that the interview flows well.

6. Give yourself a pep talk:

YOU are the most well-qualified, well-spoken, well-mannered, intelligent, personable and professional candidate the client will ever interview. No one is more qualified for this position than YOU!

7. Be honest: When you walk into the interview room, don’t be afraid to mention that you are feeling nervous. You will often find that once you have mentioned it, your nerves will fade.

8. Remember that you are also interviewing THEM. As the interviewer asks you questions, at the end of your answer, try to ask the interviewer a relevant question. All of a sudden, you and the interviewer are having a discussion, not a one-sided interview.

9. Arrive early: Aim to get to arrive 5-10 minutes before the interview is scheduled to start. Running late will only increase those stress levels.

10. Don’t be afraid to be nervous! Above all, don’t be afraid of being nervous. In a high stress situation, nerves will help you. They will essentially enable to you respond quickly to questions and will make you more aware of what’s going on around you.
