Writing a Person Specification

chemist with flaskWhen looking to recruit a new member of scientific staff, the personal specification is often overlooked. The person specification identifies the kind of person needed to fulfill the demands of the science job by providing an outline of the characteristics and attributes considered essential or desirable in the ideal candidate.

A good place to start when embarking on writing a person specification is to consider the following sub-headings:

  • Knowledge and qualifications
  • Skills and experience
  • Motivation and other relevant interests
  • Behaviour or attitude
  • Transport and availability
  • Other requirements
