European scientists have developed robotic fish which detects contamination and pollution in water. Click here to find out more.

As reported by the BBC, European scientists have developed robotic fish which detects contamination and pollution in water.

The pollution-hunting fish is 1.5 metres long and cost £20,000 for the scientists to develop. It is fitted with sensors which pick up pollutants leaking from ships or undersea pipelines. In fact, the fish reduced the time it takes to detect pollutants from weeks to seconds. The fish can communicate with each other, avoid obstacles, map their journey and transmit their data back to shore. Currently undertaking first trials in northern Spain, modifications will then be made to improve the large yellow fish.

Speaking of the pollution detecting project, Luke Speller, Senior Scientist as the research division of technology consultancy, the BMT Group stated, “The idea is that we want to have real-time monitoring of pollution, so that if someone is dumping chemicals or something is leaking, we can get to it straight away, find out what is causing the problem and put a stop to it.”

The project has part-funded by the EU and used expertise from scientists from the University of Essex and the University of Strathclyde. Further input came from the technology consultancy, the BMT Group and from the Tyndall National Institute and Thales Safare, which is a unit of Europe’s largest defence electronics group.

In his speech at the Policy Exchange, Willets stated that some of the UK’s greatest assets are our universities, our science facilities and our researchers – Willets stated that it is therefore crucial that steps are made to help create jobs and thus boost economic growth.

Willets also stated that he wants to make Britain the best place to study science. He stated that he is keen to ensure that new scientific institutions are established with private funding due to the lack of government funding available. It is proposed that these new institutions will be a new type of postgraduate university which will focus on science and technology. UK businesses are therefore being urged to sponsor these new private universities that specialise in science. Speaking of his plans, Willets stated, “We have to bridge the gap between limited public funding and continuing strong demand for higher education and research.”

A 23% increase in the EU’s research budget means that €1.6 billion is available for frontier research.

Timeshighereducation.com has reported a 23% increase in the EU’s research budget, meaning that €1.6 billion is available for frontier research.

Overall funding for the European Commission’s Seventh Framework Programme has risen to €7 billion (£6.4 billion), the European Research Council (ERC) being the main benefactor, with the increase in their budget. Jerzy Langer, professor at the Polish Academy of Sciences, believes the UK are the main winners in investment, but praises politicians for listening to scientists and granting money without guaranteed returns.

Richard Jones, pro vice-chancellor of research and development at Sheffield University, believes this “is good news for us in an environment in which our own research councils’ funding is being squeezed.” Despite the funding having no real guarantees the ERC funding has traditionally led to good results; such as the winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2010, Konstantin Novoselov of the University of Manchester, being able to conduct his research thanks to an ERC grant. Around €80 billion in GDP growth and 450,000 jobs are expected to be created in the next 15 years thanks to the increased funds.

Due to their continued success, CK Science, the UK’s leading specialist scientific and engineering recruitment consultancy, welcomed two new specialist scientific recruitment consultants to their Head Office team this week.

Due to their continued success, CK Science, the UK’s leading specialist scientific and engineering recruitment consultancy, welcomed two new specialist scientific recruitment consultants to their Head Office team this week.

Hannah Milward – Temporary Recruitment at CK Science, Chesterfield

Hannah Milward, has joined the CK Science Head Office in Chesterfield and will be focusing on temporary recruitment for the science and engineering industries. Hannah graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with a Bsc Honours in Food and Nutrition. During her course, Hannah spent her Industrial Placement Year working for Northern Foods, where, for the first six months, she worked in Quality Assurance, and for the remaining six months she worked in Technical Development.

Hannah has recently passed her probation at CK Science. On passing her probation, her Manager, Russell Oakley stated, “Hannah has been successful in passing her probationary period with CK Science. She has taken the Chesterfield temp section by the scruff of it’s neck and given it the shake up it needed, with 6 placements in the space of 3 months!!!! She has also shown great promise with her ability to consult with both client and candidates at such an early stage in her recruitment career. I am confident this will continue and I’m sure Hannah will develop her section into a extremely profitable asset for the Chesterfield office!”

Naynesh Mistry – Permanent Recruitment for the Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology and Food Industries at CK Science, Chesterfield

Naynesh joined the CK Science Head Office this week and will be focusing on permanent recruitment for the Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology and Food Industries. Naynesh has Bsc in Pharmaceuticals and Cosmetic Sciences. With a strong background in Pharmaceuticals, Naynesh has previously worked as Senior Scientist at Pfizer, an Inhalation Scientist at 3M Healthcare and a Laboratory Manager at Keele University where he was responsible for supervising 40 highly charged students! Naynesh has always wanted to get into recruitment and his interests include tennis coaching, football and learning to cook (although he says this is more of a challenge than an interest!).

Speaking of Naynesh’s arrival to CK Science, his Manager Russell Oakley stated, “The Chesterfield recruitment team are really pleased to have Naynesh on board in the Chesterfield office. We have been really busy over recent weeks and Naynesh is a much needed addition to the team, bringing inside industry knowledge and enthusiasm to the team. We are confident Naynesh will develop into a successful consultant and we all wish him well in his new role.”

Keng T Ng has picked up this year’s prize for Best Final Year Student in Pharmaceutical Analysis at the University of Sunderland, awarded by national science recruitment agency CK Science.

The 25-year-old, from Malaysia, who began his BSc Chemical and Pharmaceutical Science (CPS) course four years ago, has studied tirelessly to achieve a first-class degree.

This week his dedication to the degree paid off when he was nominated as an outstanding candidate who achieved highly impressive final year results, excelling particularly in pharmaceutical analysis, and during his third-year placement at local company, Onyx Scientific.

The award given by CK Science to students at the University of Sunderland has been running for over 10 years, and has been successful in promoting the wealth of talent within science in the region, and to show the recruitment agency’s commitment to helping graduates in the North East.

Keng said: “I am delighted with this award, it means so much. I have worked really hard and in the end I’ve got what I wanted.

“I have an interest in the research and development of anti-cancer drugs; it’s an area we have learned a lot about during the CPS course. Researching and reading journals in this area makes you realise how many people worldwide are affected by this disease and it would be great to know you’re doing work which could help. Eventually I’d like to do a PhD.”

To help him achieve his goals, Keng says he has been making the most of the state-of-the-art analytical equipment in the University’s new £8.5m Science Complex.

He said: “We had a lot of time and exposure to the analytical instruments in the labs, it’s much more hands-on. The equipment we have here definitely helps with your research and the new facilities are amazing.”

Liam O’Connell, CK Science Operations Director, said: “As a recruitment company specialising in the scientific sector for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, we work closely with universities and wanted to put something back into higher education.

“We thought the best way was to sponsor an industrial placement and have a prize at the university for the most outstanding student. They receive £200 and a certificate.

“Keng was an outstanding candidate who excelled in his final-year results and thoroughly deserves this success, which will no doubt help boost his employability.”

He added: “Presenting this award helps us build links with university departments and create a greater understanding of what we can do to help students once they graduate.”

Keng has now moved on to the University’s new MSc in Drug Discovery and Development and has been selected from 100 students nationwide to carry out his project with major multi-national pharmaceutical company, AstraZeneca.

Keng’s MSc Programme Leader, John Lough said: “These are increasingly challenging times for students, but Keng is a shining example to others showing how much can still be achieved with a combination of determination and application on University of Sunderland pharmaceutical science programmes.”
