Pfizer Plan to Enter Japanese Generic Drug Market in 2011

As reported in the Japanese newspaper, Nikkei, Pfizer, one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies, are considering marketing generic drugs in Japan, starting as early as 2011. A spokesman from Pfizer’s Japan unit stated, “Pfizer is considering entering the generic drug market in Japan as it seeks to diversify its business operations to build a stronger earnings structure.”

The Japanese drug division will initially market 70 of Pfizer’s off-patient medications. Further along the line it is planned that the company will apply for sales licenses for generic drugs based on other companies’ expired patents. This could be a profitable move for the pharmaceutical company as Japan’s generic drugs market is expected to reach 515 billion yen in the year ended March 2010. Online Recruitment for Science Jobs Grows

This week, The Recruiter, reported that online hiring has increased across most sectors. This is promising news for job seekers looking for science jobs.

Monster’s Employment Index grew by an encouraging seven points in October, indicating the online scientific job market is showing early signs of recovery, with job demand reaching its highest level since February 2009. Hugo Sellert, Head of Economic Research at Monster Worldwide: “Despite economic indicators showing that the UK remains mired in recession, the solid expansion in online recruitment activity in October suggests the fourth quarter is off to a better start. The rise in online job openings to an eight-month high points to an early recovery in hiring demand. Companies across the UK may now be considering expanding payrolls again as economic conditions have stabilised.”

CK Science Announced as Guest Speakers for the Social Media in Recruitment Conference 2010

Taking place on Thursday 22^nd April 2010, the Social Media Recruitment Conference is the second largest of its kind in the UK. CK Science, a leading specialist scientific recruitment company, has been recognized by the conference organizers to be a pioneer in the use of social media in scientific recruitment, and has been invited to speak at the Conference.Here at CK Science, we recognize that there are not enough hours in the day for our specialist scientific Consultants to drive our social media strategy themselves. Therefore, one of the first steps taken was to recruit a Marketing Graduate, Catherine Gutsell, to further develop and promote our online brand and digital communications strategy. The main activities Catherine has engaged in are:

- Search engine optimization.

- Using social media such as LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook to both educate and inform clients and candidates, not just to sell.

- Using YouTube video job advertisements as a way to connect with candidates in a more human and personalised way.

- Running regular surveys to gather information about the Scientific and Pharmaceutical industry and communicating findings back through relevant publications and social media.

- Using online communities such as Ning.com and external blogs to candidates with industry updates and careers advice.

So far, our efforts appear to be working. We have seen a 30% increase in organic hits to our scientific recruitment website. Not only this, but the deployment of our social media strategy has also added value to the experience we provide to both candidates and clients. In terms of our candidates, our use of social media enriches their job seeking experience as it allows us to build long-term sustainable relationships, enabling us to completely understand their needs. From a client’s perspective, by using social media to really get to grips with what the scientific jobseeker is about, we are able to create a great match between candidate and job. This means we don’t waste our clients’ time putting inappropriate candidates in front of them.

The aim of the conference is to help Corporate Recruiters, Recruitment Agencies, Recruitment Advertising Agencies, Job Boards and Recruitment Industry Suppliers get the most from the use of social media. The organizer, Mike Taylor, from Online Recruitment Marketing Specialists, stated, “There were over 150 people at the first Conference which was a clear indication in the interest in Social Media. Next year’s conference will be held some nine months after the first one which means that there will be plenty of new things to talk about and discuss.”

CK Science Take Part in a 12 Hour Gym Marathon to Raise Funds for the South Yorkshire Community Foundation

On Saturday 26th October a team of “athletes” from CK Science took part in a 12 hour gym marathon at the Mount Gym near Chesterfield to raise funds for the South Yorkshire Community Foundation.

The team won the treadmill challenge running and walking over 121km over the 12 hours. The event which started at 07:00am certainly took its toll on some of the participants with Sunday being a day of rest.

However, CK Science Director Liam O Connell, stated ‘This was a very worthy cause and despite the toughness of the challenge, the team are delighted to have participated and we have raised over £300 for a very worthy charity’. A large number of teams took part, some using treadmill and some using spin bikes for their marathons.

Scottish Oil Discovery Boosts Shares in Faroe and Dana

Shares in Faroe Petroleum (FPM) and Dana Petroleum (DMX) have enjoyed a boost of 6.3 percent to their share price after the Atlantic Margin, North Sea and Norway-focused explorer announced an oil discovery at the Tornado exploration project, west of Shetland. The well discovered oil and gas in Tertiary reservoir sandstones, and data collection is currently ongoing. As a result, Dana Petroleum saw its shares rise by almost 3%, whilst shares in Faroe Petroleum got a 6% boost. Dana’s chief executive, Tom Cross, stated: “The discovery of hydrocarbons at Tornado is an important result as it lies in an area of the UK Continental Shelf where Dana and Faroe Petroleum have very strong positions as the key independents. We look forward to the sidetrack well to determine the ultimate size of this new field.” This indicates that the discovery may open up a new area for the duo with the potential to create many new jobs in the oil and gas industry in Scotland. GSK to Provide 1,500 New Jobs to the Scientific Industry

GlaxoSmithKline’s £170 million Bioscience Campus will act as a leading centre in innovation in biotechnology and drug development. The project is to be funded by the Government, the Technology Strategy Board and EEDA, the Wellcome Trust and GSK.

Due to open in 2011, the science park will house 25 companies and is set to create 1,500 new jobs within the scientific industry. These staff will play an integral role in reaffirming the UK as a global hub of the life sciences industry. The 1500 staff will have access to GSK’s specialist skills, management and expertise in the area of drug discovery. This is welcome news for the scientific job market as there is strong potential for the site to grow fivefold within a decade. Speaking of the new Bioscience Campus, Business Secretary, Lord Mandelson stated, ‘The Stevenage Campus represents a huge investment in the future of Britain’s bioscience industry and is a strong new platform for the work of our Office for Life Sciences. It will leverage our existing strengths as a world leader in the sector, helping it to grow and reinforcing our international competitiveness. And ultimately it will help us build towards a stronger UK economy coming out of the global downturn.’

Aim for that Nobel Prize

The discovery of a green fluorescent protein from Jellyfish has helped scientists to win a Nobel Chemistry Prize. This protein was isolated from Jellyfish and used as a luminous genetic tag. Tagging is an important tool for biologists to see how the molecular machinery in cells operates. This common biological method has numerous applications such as looking at how cancer cells spread through tissue.

CK Fun Sports Day

Sumo wrestling, bouncy boxing, kwik cricket, penalty shoot outs , this fine selection of classic summer sports helped make up the activities for the CK Science sports day held on Saturday 19^th July. A close team contest resulted in overall victory going to “The Bare Knees”, ably led by Barney Smith. Despite the excessive exercise and the odd minor casualty all participants made it through to compete in the final sumo relay. Many thanks to the organising team from Mount St Marys School in Spinkhill for putting on such a fantastic event and congratulations to the winning team.

CK Science recently entered a number of teams in the Tuxford School PTA Golf Charity Day at Rufford Park Golf Club in Nottinghamshire, as well as providing sponsorship for the event. Tuxford School, has been awarded Technology College status and CK Science has built up a relationship with the school over the last 6 years sponsoring a number of events. The CK Science teams consisting of staff and clients performed admirably, with the team captained by Ashley Kirk finishing a commendable third and a great day was had by all.The relationship between CK Science and secondary level education is vital to encourage A level and GCSE students to actively pursue a career within the scientific and engineering disciplines and as such, we actively nurture relationships with schools such as Tuxford. A man who sliced his finger off with the propellor of a model airplane has regrown the missing part. This was with the help of what he calls “pixie dust”, provided by his brother who works in regenerative medicine and who prefers to call it extra cellular matrix. Apparently it took just 4 weeks for his finger, including fingernail, to grow back. Click here for more info. Alzheimer’s breakthrough

A breakthrough in tackling Alzheimer’s disease has been announced that may lead to a new generation of potent treatments. Scientists synthesised a compound that targets a key biological pathway essential to the development of the disease.m In tests on mouse and fruit fly animal models, the molecule reduced changes in the brain associated with Alzheimer’s by more than 50 per cent. Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia which affects about 700,000 people in the UK, mostly over the age of 65. A range of drugs are currently available to alleviate symptoms but they do not halt the condition and can have serious side effects. The research was led by the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetic and although the work is at an early stage, the German researchers hope it will pave the way for more effective treatments. Britain gets its first Nappy Recycling Plant

The Guardian in reporting that a Canadian company, Knowaste is opening a nappy recycling plant in the Midlands. The plant will initially deal with 30,000 tonnes a year, which represents 4% of the 750,000 tonnes of nappies sent to landfill every year. Here at CK Science we are constantly on the look out for easy ways to keep off the excess pounds, imagine the excitement in the office when news of this study into dieting filtered through. Apparently it is possible to fool your body and suppress hunger by remembering your last meal. Unfortunately some of us appear to have no imagination.

CK Science to appear on Sky TV

CK Science are currently in talks with Sky TV to appear on a new careers channel aimed at assiting people find work. CK Science will appear in a quarterly, half hour programme that will be aired in the summer targetting anybody that is interested in starting, or progressing within the science sector. The programme will also be broadcast on the internet via social networking sites. Ajay Patel, Manager of the CK Science Southern office, will be giving advice to graduate scientists about interviewing, CV writing and how to position yourself to get the right job. Lorna Crombie and Jonathan Hart-Smith, Directors of CK Science and CK Clinical respectively, will offer their thoughts and impressions about candidate availability, the global science market and how this impacts on recruitment. As part of the programme other major science companies will also talk about their experiences in recruiting scientists. CK Science will reach a world stage through broadcast by satellite and via the internet directly into peoples homes.

Science Recruitment Consultant Prize Winners

Congratulations to Jason Johal and Katherine Robinson for taking the top permanent and temporary recruiter prize for 2007. As well as receiving a trophy the pair each earned a substantial cash prize from their employers CK Science. “I am pleased that our hard work helping our candidates find their ideal jobs in science has been recognised”said Johal. Robinson wanted to “thank those clients that have given such positive feedback on the service I provide this year”. Well done both of you.

You can grow marigolds on the moon!

The BBC is reporting that according to the European Space Agency, we will soon be able to grow flowers on the moon. They have shown that marigolds will grow in crushed rock similar to lunar soil, without additional nutrients. This could be seen as a step towards human habitation of the moon. How cool is that? UKs first hybrid embryos created in Newcastle

Whether you are for or against part-human and part-animal hybrids, they have been created by Newcastle University and it’s a UK first. Spicy foods to kill cancer cells

Scientists at the University of Nottingham have discovered the key to the ability of spicy foods to kill cancer cells. They found capsaicin, an ingredient of jalapeno peppers, triggers cancer cell death by attacking mitochondria – the cells’ energy-generating boiler rooms. By binding to proteins in the cancer cell mitochondria they trigger apoptosis, or cell death, without harming surrounding healthy cells.

Nottingham is currently one of the UK€™s main areas for Biotechnology with many existing and start-up companies setting up base in the area over recent years and creating demand for science recruitment. Click for more information

Student Careers Advice

CK Science was recently invited by Sheffield University to run a cv and interview techniques workshop for the Microbiology and Biochemistry departments. The workshops are aimed at 2nd and 3rd year under graduate students and offer valuable instruction to the students as they embark on their daunting search for a job in the scientific industry. Philippa Robertson, the Senior Consultant running the course said ” So far CK has run with the applications workshop and got an excellent response from the students who seemed to really enjoy receiving practical advice tailored to science jobs rather than just general tips. I hope the interview tips workshop this Friday goes equally well”. CK Science remains committed to supporting the promoting science as a worthwhile and rewarding career in 21^st century Britain
