Co-operate, don’t compete
Co-operate, don’t compete with other departments and colleagues – try to be motivated by seeing your fellow team members succeed.
If you are asked to do something as part of a team, be it to attend a meeting or attend an event – be there and don’t be late.
When one of your team members has worked hard, make a point of congratulating and complimenting them. You will therefore be seen as a valuable part of the team.
As a good team player, you should be seen to be willing to contribute and share the workload. Work with your team mates to make things happen.
Speak up and express your ideas and thoughts clearly, directly and with respect for your fellow team members.
Listen first and speak second. Don’t argue and debate your team member’s comments – simply listen and then gather your thoughts and respond.
Know your goals
What is the overall goal of the team? What does your team need in order to achieve these goals? Setting goals will give you and your team a means of measuring how your team is doing.
If you have a skill in a certain area – teach your fellow team members.
Remember that conflict is normal and will often occur within groups. Disagreements will often play a vital role in forming the teams identity.
A sure fire way to become unpopular within your team is to gossip about another team member behind their back. Should an issue arise, try to solve it directly with that group member.
Don’t blame others
You will lose the respect of your fellow team members if you are seen to be constantly blaming others for your incompetence. Pointing the finger will only make you look like a coward – so fess up and explain why you missed your deadline.
Go the extra mile
Whether that means staying in the office after hours or taking on that little bit more responsibility – your team is reliant to do your job, and do it well. By going the extra mile in your role, you will not only ensure the success of the team, but also gain the respect of your fellow co-workers.
A good team player is one that people like to be around – optimistic and positive people are attractive and their energy can be infectious. Actively encourage team members to celebrate the achievements of the team and to learn from any set-backs.
It is one thing to celebrate the success of your team, but to act like you are the superstar of the team is a whole different story. By bragging people will become to regret any successes and tensions will form in the group.
