What’s it like working as a Laboratory Technician?

The work can be very diverse. One minute you could be preparing standards, another you can be maintaining lab equipment and then you could be analysing a production sample for quality control.

What does a Laboratory Technician do?

You can be doing a wide range of things. From the mundane but necessary washing glassware, to preparing samples for off site analysis, or doing basic repairs on equipment. A laboratory technician is a very wide ranging position and the work is dependent on the company you are employed with. 

What is a typical day for you?

At the company I work at there really isn’t such a thing as a typical day. It can all depend on what the production team are pushing through and any problems that have been encountered over night. There are the normal daily checks to run but otherwise it is all down to the needs of all the other departments.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Mostly the diversity of the work. But the opportunity to learn new techniques or ways to improve the pre-existing methods used can be very rewarding. The people you work with can make a huge difference, I’m lucky enough to be working with a great bunch and we all come from different backgrounds, which is great.

What is the hardest part of your job?

The hours can sometimes make life a little hard, as well as working every other weekend. But I’m blessed with adaptable and understanding children.

Why did you decide to pursue this career?

I have always had a passion for science and this kind of work suites my personality quite well. I am one of those people who has a constant need to learn, and although at times it can get a little repetitive it’s not long before something pops up to grab your attention and ignite the old grey cells.

What advice would you give to somebody considering a Laboratory Technician as a career?

Be prepared for anything, every company is different, with different expectations. If you initially find yourself in a position that doesn’t feel right for you just remember you are gaining valuable experience and the perfect job is only round the corner.
